Maxine Mae Temple, of Salina, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Holiday Resort in Salina. Maxine was born June 29, 1924, to Max L. and Anna Kay (Miller) Duryee at the family home in Dorrance. Maxine attended Dorrance grade school and high school along with all of her brothers and sisters.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother; sister, Cora (Robert) Whitmer; and two brothers, Laverne (Bernice) Duryee and Dale (Betty Mac) Duryee.

She is survived by her husband, Eldon; daughters, Melissa Temple and June (Cecil) Cooper; two grandchildren; and a very special young man to Maxine and Eldon, Christopher David Lewis. Maxine is also survived by her sister, Betty Goodwin, of Ponca City, Okla.; and brother, Henry (Nancy) Duryee, of Dorrance; plus a great number of nieces and nephews all over the country.

Maxine married Eldon Temple on July 3, 1954, at the Presbyterian manse in Abilene. She was a wonderful wife, following Eldon 20 years as an “Army wife.” Maxine loved life and was always a happy woman. She loved her girls. She liked playing card games and being with people. She liked working in the church and for many years was involved in the annual chicken-and-noodle supper at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church every October.

Visitation will be held from noon-8 p.m. Monday, April 14, with family receiving friends from 4-6 at Ryan Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, Eighth and Grand, Salina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Ryan Mortuary.

Willis E. Bell, 91, of Salina, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at his home. He was born March 10, 1923, in Wichita to Logan and Cora (Johnson) Bell.

He was a graduate of Kansas State University. Willis was a professional mechanical engineer. He began his career with Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers in Kansas City. Later, he became a partner with John Shaver in Salina, where he was involved in many projects in Salina such as the city library and the City-County Building. He was also the chief engineer for the Kansas State University press-box project. Later, he moved to Wichita to serve as general manager for Central Heating and Cooling. After his retirement, Willis moved back to Salina and worked as an engineering consultant. He was a semi-pro hockey player for the Boeing hockey team.

He is survived by his wife, Ardyce; two sons, Kirby Bell, of Kansas City, Mo., and Kevin Bell, of Las Vegas; granddaughter, Shelby Bell, of Des Moines, Iowa; grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Bergmeier, of Overland Park; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at All Saints Orthodox Church, 2818 Scanlan Avenue, Salina. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the church, with the Right Rev. Daniel Griffith officiating. The divine liturgy will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at the church. Burial will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to All Saints Orthodox Church or Hospice of Salina. Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina, is handling arrangements.

Julia A. Nelson, 92, Minneapolis, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis. She was born February 13, 1922 on the Jagger family farm near Minneapolis to Fred and Ethel (Henderson) Jagger.

She was united in marriage with Ralph Nelson on February 5, 1950 on the Jagger family farm. Julia farmed with her dad and she worked as a midwife. She was the Executive Director of the Minneapolis Housing Authority for many years and she was the director when the Elkhorn Apartments were built in Minneapolis. She retired at the age of 75 in 1996.

Julia was a Girl Scout leader and she was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Atlantean Brown Club, and the Ottawa County Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; son Larry Nelson; grandson Josh Nelson; brothers Sid and Joe Jagger; and sister Mary Buchele.

Survivors include her sons Dennis Nelson and his wife Jeannie and Fred Nelson and his wife Jean; daughter Julie Wallace and her husband Scott; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 15 at the Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to the V.F.W. Auxiliary Fair Stand Fund or the American Diabetes Association and may be left in care of the funeral home.
