It’s Nice to Have Company

saline countyBy Bart J. Allen

As I watch the circus of the stars known as the Saline County Commission over the last year, one thought often comes to mind. Welcome to my world, folks.
If I’m to believe what I read, there is a high level of exasperation among the voters regarding a long and seemingly non-ending series of decisions and statements by our commissioners that reflect a complete disconnect with truth, reality, and the voter’s values. That’s probably putting it mildly.
Many are aware with my tireless battle to bring some semblance of justice for our family in the case involving our son’s death. For the last ten years, it’s been classified as an unsolved suicide, the only one in America. By the way, congrats on that honor, Saline County.
What exactly is an unsolved suicide anyway? I’m sure this has probably puzzled many of you over the years. Well, now that all of you’ve had a little taste of how they do business down at the Saline County Commission, it should be a little more clear to everyone – they make it up as they go along. After all, they’re Sheriff Kochanowski’s boss. He does exactly what they tell him to.
Don’t believe that? Consider this little known fact. Mr. Duncan instructed the Sheriff to come talk to me last spring after I pointed out our son’s killer could walk in, confess, and walk out again due to statutes of limitation. I also pointed out it probably wouldn’t reflect well on Duncan, since the sheriff works for him, in addition to his other political problems. Re-election would be iffy, if not impossible this year.
Since the county, from top to bottom, has maintained our son committed suicide, why would Duncan worry a person would come forward and admit to killing him? It’s obvious – because he knows the truth, that’s why. Indeed, the cops did come and talk, as Duncan told them to, but that’s another column.
For ten years, it’s been CYA, with the sheriff taking the brunt of my attacks like he agreed to do those many years ago. But then Randy went and broke ranks. He made the sheriff bend over, just to potentially save his own butt. I’ll bet the sheriff loved that. He’s just trying to stay alive until retirement.
Kochanowski’s getting a little payback by announcing re-opening of the Farmer sexual harassment case to interview witnesses they didn’t at the time. Now that he has the chance to cause trouble for Duncan, Kochanowski can’t wait to make sure interviews are conducted in a case, just not our son’s case. Of course, helping to solve the murder of a child can’t possibly be as important as taking Duncan down a peg or two.
From my experience over the last decade, I wouldn’t count on logic and sanity prevailing anytime soon. Sorry to be the messenger on that one, folks, but it is nice to have a little company.
