dra40416On August 30, 1918, Marie Draemel was born in Superior Township, McPherson, County, Inman, KS, to Jacob and Marie Toews Loepp. Marie died April 16, 2014 in Salina, KS.

Marie grew up on a farm, went to Welcome Grade School #122, graduated through the McPherson Rural School system, and graduated from Buhler Rural High School. With her father’s approval, she attended Bethel College, North Newton, KS and graduated in 1941.

May 15, 1932, Marie was baptized backwards by Rev. John Esau in a flowing stream (creek) and became a member of the Zoar Mennonite Church, KMB member, Inman, KS. Her membership was transferred to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, KC, MO, just before she was married to Harry Richard Draemel. When they came to Salina the membership was transferred to Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, Salina, KS.

Marie graduated from the Bethel Deaconess Hospital Nurses’ training, Newton, KS, in 1945. Then she worked at Asbury Hospital during the night hours. After post graduate training in OB, GYN, and New Born Nursery at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, Jersey City, N.J., she worked at KU Medical Center, KC, KS for 10 years.

Marie was married to Harry Richard Draemel June 6, 1949 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, KC, MO, by Dr. Richard Trelease. They adopted two children; Ian Richard Draemel and Marie Catherine Draemel.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Harry Richard; a daughter, Marie Catherine Draemel; brothers, Henry, David, Reuben, and Baby Boy Loepp; and sisters, Martha White and Anna Plett.

Survivors include her son Ian and wife, Mary Draemel; six grandchildren, Becky, Ann, Michael, Amy (Mike) Weber, Elizabeth and Valerie; and 3 great grandchildren, Hannah Draemel, Haley Weber and Xavier Weber.

She has a brother, Menno Loepp and 4 sisters, Esther Willems, Leona Koslowsky, Helen Faul and Velma Schroeder.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, Salina. Inurnment will be in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Memorials are suggested to the Salina Food Bank or the Salvation Army.

Steven E. Barker, M.D., 62, Minneapolis died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis. He was born August 16, 1951 in Winfield to Kenneth and Marie (Bell) Barker.
He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1973; the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1976; and St. Joseph Family Practice Residency in 1979. Dr. Barker practiced family medicine in Minneapolis for 20 years with Wedel, Wedel, and Barker.
Dr. Barker was a member, former elder, deacon, and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis.
On June 29, 1975 he married Pamela Prochaska. She survives along with his mother Marie Barker of Winfield; three daughters Jennifer Hosler and her husband Nicholas and Anne Hall and her husband Adam all of Lawrence, and Patricia Little, M.D. and her husband Dustin of Wichita; four grandchildren Preston and Lauren Hosler, and Aaron and Michael Hall; and brother Stan Barker and his wife Lisa of Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson Miles Steven Hosler.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis with Pastor Michele McHenry officiating. A memorial visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis – the family will not be present.
At his request, Dr. Barker’s body was donated to the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church or the Ottawa County Health Center and may be left in care of Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle Avenue, Minneapolis, KS 67467.
