E-Waste Collection set for May 10th

e-wasteThe City of Salina in partnership with Midwest Recycling Center will hold an electronic waste (e-waste) collection event on Saturday, May 10, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Salina South High School, West Parking Lot, 730 East Magnolia Road. E-waste will be accepted from residents, businesses, schools, non-profits and government entities.

This year’s expanded event will accept almost anything with a cord or a battery. Exceptions are: smoke detectors, glass lamps, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, alkaline batteries and PCB ballasts. There is no limit on the number of items each participant may dispose of at the event. Some charges will apply: CRT monitors are $5 each, CRT televisions up to 27” are $15 each, CRT and
projection televisions over 27” are $35, and console televisions are $35. Fees must be paid in cash or check and will be due at the time of drop-off.

E-waste is consumer electronic equipment that has become obsolete or is no longer functional and needs to be discarded. Old computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, keyboards, and microwaves all fall into the category of e-waste. This year’s expanded acceptance
includes kitchen appliances, window air conditioners and more. For a detailed listing of items that will be accepted, please check under Upcoming Events on the City of Salina website at www.salina-ks.gov or direct questions to the City of Salina’s Household Hazardous
Waste Facility at 785-826-6638 or HHW@salina.org. Midwest Recycling Center will also accept questions at 636-223-0150.

Electronic products contain valuable recoverable materials such as aluminum, copper, gold, silver, plastics, and ferrous metals, along with hazardous materials like mercury, lead, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants. Recycling e-waste not only clears space
in your home and saves valuable space in our landfill; it also preserves valuable resources and keeps potentially toxic materials out of the environment.

In order to help provide an organized traffic flow in and out of the event, signs will be posted and traffic cones will be visible, indicating the direction of traffic. This will guide participants to the drop-off location. Participants will remain in their vehicles as collection staff unloads the e-waste.
