A traffic stop late Wednesday night, has helped Salina Police clear several recently burglaries including a burglary where 118 guns were taken from Cleve’s Marine and Sporting Goods at 136 S. Broadway that was reported on April 14th.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said 27-year-old Gregory Walburn and 32-year-old Mathew Hewitt both of Salina are likely to face federal charges in connection with the theft of the guns. Sweeney anticipates more arrest in the case.
Walburn was taken into custody following the traffic stop on Wednesday night on outstanding municipal and district court warrants, and Hewitt was arrested Thursday evening before a search warrant was executed at his apartment at 1310 E. North where 68 of the guns stolen from Cleve’s were recovered. A total of 73 guns have been recovered .
Also found in Hewitt’s apartment were items taken in recent burglaries at the Pairieland Market 305 E. Walnut, Uptown Hair Salon 307 E. Walnut, Jack Parr Associates 917 E. Prescott, and a home burglary April 22nd west of Salina.
Sweeney said the investigation continues with assistance from ATF, The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.
