With an inmate population of 252, Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said Friday the Saline County Jail has had to rearrange inmate housing and move additional inmates to jails in surrounding counties.

When the current jail was opened in 1995, there were 20 beds for women inmates, as of Friday 63 women were in custody of Saline County.

Kochanowski said that one 64 bed unit of the jail that has used to house men, now will house women. Male inmates will be moved to the former women’s unit, and others are currently housed in jails in Ottawa, Cloud, Mitchell, and McPherson Counties.

Fourteen people who are serving weekend sentences will be booked in Friday.

For the last couple of years an advisory committee has been meeting to consider recommendations for expansion of the jail to be presented to Saline County voters.
