Darrell Frank Sanders was born on November 20, 1912, on the family homestead southeast of Lamar, Kansas. His parents were Frank and Carrie Stewart Sanders. He passed away on Tuesday, May 27, at the Ottawa County Health Center in Minneapolis, Kansas, surrounded by his family.

     He attended Rural District 44 , and then went to Minneapolis to attend high school in 1928 and graduated in May 1931. His family farmed and raised cattle.

     He served in Europe in World War II in the U.S. Army 692nd Field Artillery Unit, Battery C. He spent the remainder of his life farming and raising cattle. He married Alean Keil of Russell on October 2, 1960. They had six children born from 1961 to 1968. He and Alean moved to Wells in 1991. He enjoyed gardening until the past couple years. He also enjoyed studying and sharing Kansas history, genealogy, and remained an avid reader and life-long learner. In October 2013, he moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Minneapolis where he celebrated his 101st birthday.

     He is survived by his wife, Alean, and his five children Anitta and Kevin Staats, Wamego; Farrell Sanders, Overland Park; Karolee and Tim Wiles, Hunter; Angela and Brian Pae, Fulton, Missouri, and Daren and Ruthie Sanders, Miltonvale. There are eleven grandchildren, Jonathan & Molly Staats, Amanda & Tj Bullock, Ben, Blake, and Will Sanders; Mariah & McKenzie Wiles, Cody & Jason Pae, and Lane & Carly Sanders. He is also survived by his sister Bonnie Steffen, Wakefield, and brother in-law Leo Whitley, Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Curtis Ray, sisters Lela Blomberg and Javene Whitley, and brothers Loy and Boyd.

     Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, May 31 at the Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Lamar. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ottawa County Museum.

Willa Mae Swanson, 87, died Monday, May 26, 2014. She was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Ava, Ill., to parents Virgil and Pearl (Falkenberry) Bower, a trucker-farmer and a nurse.She was preceded in death by her son, Peter Schneider; brother, Norman Bower; and grandson, Jeff Schneider.

Willa married Mel Schneider in Tennessee in April 1946. After having served in the Navy, Melvin Andrew Schneider re-enlisted in the Army. Willa had a daughter, Helen Marie Gregory. Together she and Mel had John Melvin, Linda Dianne, Peter Bradford, George Allen and Deborah Ann Schneider. They lived in many places as a military family, with Mel finishing his career at Fort Riley, and they lived in Salina. They divorced in 1954, and Willa remained in Salina, where she raised all six children on her own.

Willa worked as a hairdresser and a waitress, she cleaned motel rooms and worked at Kline’sDepartment Store and Sears in Salina. She lived in Tucson, Ariz., for five years, then returned to work as an assistant for Sadie Miller in McPherson for several years, returning once again to Salina.

Willa was always resilient and strong, overcoming cancer several times. She moved to Olathe to be nearer Linda Vogan and Pete Schneider, living there eight years by herself, until October, when she moved into Villa St. Francis Nursing Facility.

She is survived by five children, Helen (Gary) Brown, of Salina, John (Carolin) Schneider, of Grandview, Texas, Linda (Dennis) Vogan, of Olathe, George Schneider. of Austin, Texas, and Deborah (Stanley) Scruggs, of Westmoreland, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Cathy Schneider, of Lawrence; sister, Betty Bame, of Ava; 21 grandchildren, Lisa Brown, Larry Brown, Jennifer Allen, Leslie Shrivers, Johnny Schneider, Darci Deskin, Darin Elliott, Brian Elliott, Andy Elliott, Shai Cox, Cliff Vogan, Don Vogan, Ryan Schneider, Dan Schneider, Rhonda Schur, Amanda Schneider, Jessica Schneider, Curtis Cole, Corey Cole, Dedra Downard and Casey Cole; 29 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.

Memorial Mass: 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with burial following in Roselawn Cemetery.

Jane Ethel (Meade) Kiser, 80, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014. She was born May 13, 1934, in Seco, Ky., to Riley and Bessie (Hall) Meade Jr.

She married Dewey Kiser on Feb. 5, 1949. They spent 48 wonderful years together.

Jane enjoyed quilting and was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan. She also worked at Ed’s Restaurantfor many years.

Survivors include her sons, Dennis and Samara Kiser and Jim and Peggy Kiser, all of Salina; daughter, Kathy and Don Hixenbaugh, of Assaria; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Patricia Howe, of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey; two brothers, John Meade and Harvey Meade; and one sister, Lavernia Anderson.

Cremation has been chosen. The family would like to greet friends from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, May 30, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401. An inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, in Brookville City Cemetery, Brookville.

Robert J. “Bob” Hinnenkamp, 96, of Salina, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014. He was born Feb. 21, 1918, on a farm just south of Salina. The family moved to Bavaria for a few years, and after his mother died, when he was 10, they moved back to Salina.

Bob graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1935 and served in the United States Army Transportation Corps during World War II.

He met Jody, the love of his life, prior to the war. They were married on June 4, 1946, and were inseparable for 68 years. Bob was very active in Scouting at the troop and district level. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV. He was a Past Grand Knight of the 3rd Degree and Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He retired from Sears Roebuck and Co.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary (Joyce) Hinnenkamp, and one sister, Margaret Martin. Survivors include his wife, Josephine; one sister, Cecelia Hinnenkamp; children, Bob (JoNell) Hinnenkamp, of Harwood, N.D., and Leo (Melody) Hinnenkamp and Mary Jo (Steve) Thorp, both of Salina; grandchildren, Brian (Marlo) Thorp, of Maryville, Mo., Danny Thorp, of Shawnee, Carrie (Tim) Brown, of Mission, Terry (Sarah) Hinnenkamp of Fargo, N.D., Christopher Hinnenkamp, of Bend, Ore., and Rob Hinnenkamp, of Phoenix; and one great-granddaughter, Elin Josephine Hinnenkamp, of Fargo.
