Wichita, KS- Members, alumni, advisers and guests of the Kansas association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, or FCCLA, recently attended the 68th annual State Leadership Conference in Wichita, KS.
With the theme of “FCCLA: The Game of Leadership”, the Kansas State Executive Council lead the conference in all the general sessions which included skits, official business, award recognition, a dynamic keynote given by Jeff Yalden, and attended several breakout sessions focused on community service, professionalism, and leadership, as well as they had the opportunity to explore future options through a college and career fair. With more than 1,500 FCCLA members in attendance, the conference was truly the ultimate leadership experience.
Members also competed in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events. STAR Events are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation.
Southeast of Saline FCCLA had 24 students compete in 8 different STAR Events and all students received a GOLD Medal rating for scoring at least 90 out of 100 points on their specific rubrics.
Receiving State Gold Medals were:
Destinee NIckelson and Liberty Bell in Jr. National Programs in Action, “Chainlinks vs Cancer”” in the Families First curriculum;
Sarah Starr and Amber Konigsfeld in Sr. Chapter Service Leadership Portfolio for “Three Helpful Wishes”.
Adrienne Pohl in Jr. Food Innovations with “Polar Pops” for a case study that involved creating and marketing a frozen dessert for children.
The next Five events received a TOP GOLD rating qualifying them for national competition in San Antonio, TEXAS July 5-11.

Brooke Koch, Rylee Miller, and Lauren Walker in Sr. Chapter in Review Display with “ You’ve Got a Friend in FCCLA.”
Maggie Chitty, Hannah Henry and Valentina Ortega in Sr. Chapter in Review Portfolio with “Meet the Flinstones..a Modern FCCLA Family.”
Brooklyn McElderry and Brittany Ostmeyer in Sr. Food Innovations with “Sassy Spuds” with a case study that involved creating a bite sized vegetable snack.
Aaron Butler, Sydney Clements, Alaura Hemphill, Orion Perry, Alan Pohl, Andrew Peuchen, Jonathan Peuchen, Hannah Puetz in Sr. Parliamentary Procedure.
Jonathan Peuchen 2013-14 Kansas FCCLA President, presided over the meeting and Andrew Peuchen, National Vice-President of Development presented a workshop on social media and ran the national officer candidate election of candidates. Hannah Henry was installed as the 2014-15 District G President and Alan Pohl was installed as the 2014-15 District
G Vice-President. Alaura Hemphill was installed as the 2014-15 Kansas FCCLA President and Valentina Ortega as the 2014-15 Kansas Vice President of Public Relations. Alaura is the 4th student from the SES FCCLA Chapter to serve as the state president and this is first time Southeast of Saline has had back-to-back state presidents.
