Salina Police early Friday afternoon apprehended a 25-year-old man who they had been looking for since leading police on a high speed chase in early April.

Master Patrol Officer Brent Rupert said Mathew Leach was taken into custody just before 1pm, after surveillance of a home in the 1400 block of Arapahoe. Leach led officers on a short foot chase before being caught.

Leach was wanted for fleeing and eluding officers on April 7th, when an officer recognized Leach in a car in the area of Republic and Centennial as being wanted for on outstanding warrants for fleeing and eluding and failure to pay.

When the officer turned on his emergency lights and sirens, Leach refused to stop, driving at speeds the reached 80 miles per hour, and driving left of center during the pursuit that was terminated after 3 minutes when the chase reached Ohio Street.

Leach was also involved in a high speed chase last summer when an officer tried to stop him for a traffic infraction near Ohio and Iron. That chased ended when Leach crashed his car near Old Highway 40 and Marymount Road. He was arrested at that time for fleeing and eluding and possession of methamphetamine.

Friday he was booked into jail on felony warrants for both flee and elude cases, probation violation, contempt of court, and numerous traffic violations.
