After a six year hiatus, The Saline County Sheriff’s Office and the Salina Police Department jointly offer a Citizen’s Academy. The Citizen’s Academy will begin on Tuesday August 12th and go each Tuesday through October 21st. Each class will run from 7-10pm.

The Citizen’s Academy is part of a continuing program designed to 1) acquaint citizens with law enforcement’s practices and services and 2) acquaint officers with concerns and perceptions of the community. participants will learn about accident and crime scene investigations, be able to ride along with a Salina Police Officer, or Saline County Sheriff’s deputy. Members of the academy will also learn about the court system, see a demonstration from the Special Response Team, and see a demonstration of law enforcement weapons and fire them.

Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said the Academy will accept up to 25 persons who will need to pass a background check. Candidates for the Citizen Academy must meet the following criteria: Minimum age of 21 years, Live or work in Saline County, Kansas, and No felony convictions No misdemeanor arrest within one year of application.
