Maurice Kerr has a deep-seated belief that all people, regardless of financial means, should have access to computers and the Internet. It is that driving force that makes him Saline County’s Sensational Sunflower.

Kerr will be recognized at the 2014 Sunflower Fair (formerly known as the Senior Fair) on September 23, 2014, in the Salina Bicentennial Center. The event is sponsored by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) in cooperation with Salina Regional Health Center and Eagle Communications. The theme for this year’s event is “Living It Up.” The event will feature expert speakers and more than 70 exhibitors. Workshop topics will include Medicare, wills and estates, preventing scams, the latest information on health and more. Several types of health screenings will also be available.

Registration costs $20 before September 12, 2014, and includes lunch. On-site registration after September 12, 2014, is $25. Kerr, Salina, volunteers a multitude of hours to make sure Saline County seniors are connected to cyberspace. For the past 10 years, Kerr has served as the volunteer manager of the Salina Senior Center computer lab. Prior to that, he volunteered in the lab on occasion. Kerr spends much of his time helping seniors connect with their families and friends via email and Facebook. He also helps seniors learn to use computer programs such as Excel and Word. Additionally, he helps with such challenges as staying connected to the Internet and resolving password issues on various mobile devices. Kerr also researches and posts a variety of information of interest to the users of the computer lab.

In addition to his computer lab duties, Kerr maintains the computer systems for both Saline County Commission on Aging facilities: the Salina Senior Center and Sunflower Adult Day Services.

Without Kerr, many Saline County seniors would not be as connected to their loved ones and the world.
