Visit Salina is pleased to announce that the Salina Siren Roller Derby Team, under the direction of Coach John Schreiber, will be hosting the first ever roller derby tournament in Kansas. The War of the Wheels Roller Derby Invitational will be held at the Salina Bicentennial Center on November 7-9, 2014.
The tournament will feature women’s teams from throughout the region including the Salina Sirens. Approximately 120 female skaters are expected to compete in the event. In addition, the tournament will utilize approximately 20 referees and scores of volunteer workers. Skaters are encouraged to bring their families to cheer on their teams competing for the 1st Annual War of the Wheels Championship Title!
“This is NOT your grandma’s roller derby. IT’S REAL, and it’s physically demanding! You have to be an athlete to compete!” Coach of the Sirens and Tournament director, John Schreiber expresses his excitement for the event, “Some people call it “Football on Skates.” Not to mention this is the fastest growing sport in the world. I think if people come see it they’ll love it!”
Tournament play will consist of a seeded consolation format featuring 12 games. Game 1 will begin on Friday at noon, followed by games at 2:30 pm, 5:00 pm, and 7:30 pm. On Saturday, play continues at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, 4:00 pm and 6:30 pm. On Sunday, the 7th place game starts at 10:30 am, Consolation at 1:00 pm, 3rd place 2:30 pm and 5:00 pm Championship.

This three-day event will bring spectators from three different states into the building and community and adds to our wide variety of fall events.”
The Salina Sirens Roller Derby Team is a Not for Profit Organization. In addition to competitive roller derby, they also take seriously helping their community. They promote women’s growth in sports, health and sportsmanship, and they work on projects that promote the cure for Breast Cancer and assist many civic organizations.
