Russell Diehl is this week’s BANK VI Hero of the Week.

Diehl runs a program called “Salina Kids on Bikes.” This program was originally started by Dick Jennings. When Jennings was unable to continue facilitating the program, Diehl stepped in and took over.

Since doing so, Diehl has rebuilt, fixed, and donated over 100 bikes to Salina children. Most of the cost has been through donations and the rest is out of his own pocket. Diehl also implemented a tag system so that if a bike is lost or stolen, the police department has a way to trace it back to the child. He is an amazing man doing an incredible job giving to the community and has even been featured in the Salina Journal and Great Plains newsletter. Most of the children that have received bikes would not have had a bike otherwise due to financial situations.

The program’s rules are simple. If you need a bike, simply come pick one out. If you outgrow the bike, bring it back and exchange it for a bigger one.
When a bicyclist is done with a bike, they can return it for someone else to utilize. Diehl also maintains the bikes at no cost to the riders. Bicyclists can come back whenever the chain needs fixed or if the tires need new tubes.
