The Salina Senior Center is partnering with B&K Prescription Shop to offer flu shots for seniors.

B&K personnel will provide shots for seniors from 10 a.m.-noon on October 22, 2014, and October 29, 2014, on the second floor of the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth. The shots will be free of charge for persons who have their Medicare cards. Persons wanting to get a shot at the Salina Senior Center also will have the option to pay $25 if they do not have a Medicare card. Payment by other forms of insurance will not be accepted at the Salina Senior Center. Anyone wanting to use another form of insurance to pay for the shot is encouraged to go directly to B&K, 601 E. Iron, for the shot.

The CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older to get the flu vaccine each year because it is the best way to prevent the flu.
There are several documented benefits from getting an annual flu shot, some of which include:

Keeping you, as well as others around you, from getting the flu
Decreasing severity and duration of flu symptoms (if you get the flu)
Reductions in flu related doctors’ visits and missed work or school
Reducing the risk of serious outcomes like hospitalizations and death

The people at greatest risk of developing complications from the flu are adults age 65 and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions. Some of these health conditions include are asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, and kidney and liver disorders.
