The Greater Salina Community Foundation is pleased to announce grants from the Fund for Greater Salina, the community’s most unrestricted community grant fund. From this fund, the Foundation makes grants to organizations or groups of individuals to provide important programs or projects that will improve our community.
Established in 1999, the Foundation is now in its 15th year, with assets totaling more than $140 million. In that time, the Foundation has awarded more than $40 million in grants, of that more than $812,000 has been from the Fund for Greater Salina, including some made in partnership with other local funders.
Fund for Greater Salina Grants are made possible by generous donations to the Fund for Greater Salina Endowment. Grants are awarded annually in the fall through a competitive application process. Gifts of any size are welcome additions to this important community grant fund.
More information on the Foundation and various community grant programs is available at www.gscf.org. This fall, GSCF received 37 requests totaling more than $142,000. The following grants were awarded:
2014 Fall Fund for Greater Salina Grants:
$5,000 Salina Area United Way- To support the expansion of Reach Out and Read, a summer reading program offered at summer lunch program sites.
$2,175 Sunflower Adult Day Services- To replace and purchase items used for daily computerized activities for clients, including a multimedia projector, tablets and accessories.
$1,000 The Volunteer Connection- To purchase items needed for “go kits” for use by emergency operations response volunteers to help coordinate communications and volunteers during a disaster.
$3,500 Salina Arts & Humanities Foundation- To support the Langston Hughes Project, an artist residency focusing on music and poetry for middle and high school students and Kansas Wesleyan students culminating in a multimedia concert as a part of the Martin Luther King Day celebration.
$2,500 Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum- to assist with the engineering and architectural design portion of a large-scale renovation of the interactive children’s area.
$2,500 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina- To assist with the increased cost of a new and more extensive screening process for 100 new mentors.
$3,000 Prairieland Market- To purchase a computer system whereby sales and inventory can be tracked and consumers will be able to purchase items using SNAP cards.
$3,055 Central Kansas Foundation- To replace beds in the residential unit to create an attractive, functional and durable living space for recovery clients.
$2,000 Smoky Hill Education Foundation- To purchase reusable items for summer camps enabling students to explore science, technology, engineering and math.
$2,500 Smoky Valley Historical Association – To assist with renovations of the “castle” and to remodel the restrooms for accessibility at Coronado Heights.
$3,500 Salina Art Center- To assist with a developmental audit of the organizations fundraising and development activities.
$1,500 Consumer Credit Counseling Service, Inc. – To update and purchase computers to help with educational programs data collection and the Circles of the Heartland program.
$3,000 Child Care Aware of Kansas – Funds will be used to purchase items needed for a profession development program for providers focused on the benefits of family style dining in child care and home settings.
$2,000 Salina Child Care Association- To provide scholarships for low income families.
$2,500 Central Kansas Mental Health – To remodel the bathroom in preparation for the opening of Crisis House, a facility designed to divert youth from hospitalization or foster care.
$2,000 Martin Luther King, Jr. Child Development Center- To provide scholarships for low income families.
$750 Messiah Festival of the Arts –To support the visiting artist and soloist who will offer a workshop for area junior high and high school students.
$750 Discover Naturally- To assist with a daylong festival designed to introduce families and children to nature and educate the community on a sustainable environmental future.
