Candidates for the Salina City Commission took questions from the media and public at a standing room only candidates forum Wednesday evening hosted by Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters.
Candidates said, while they hated to see old buildings torn down, they believe the city should allow Salina Regional Health Center to demolish the former St. Johns Hospital at Ash and Penn. Because he is employed by Salina Regional Health Center, Dr. Trent Davis recused himself from the question. Salina Regional Health Center has filed a lawsuit against the city for not allowing them to demolish the old hospital.
The commission candidates said they would also like to see greater cooperation between Salina and Saline County concerning the Saline County Health Department, or perhaps make the health department a joint venture between the city and county again.
The candidates also said that they are not concerned about the city not having achieved a population of 50,000 plus.
The forum was recorded for airing on Access TV of Salina and their website at a later date.
Advanced voting begins March 18th in the County Clerks Office. Election Day is Tuesday April 7th.
Due to a conflict, current city commissioner Randall Hardy was not in attendance.
