Everyday Lights to Perform at Art a la Carte on Friday

Everyday Lights(Salina, KS 05-15) The third Art a la Carte concert of the spring series scheduled for Friday, May 15 at Campbell Plaza downtown, will feature Everyday Lights.

Comprised of Salina-based musicians with a love for folk music and jazz rhythms, the five-member ensemble is: Gus Applequist, double bass; Paul Austin, guitar and vocals; Jennifer Chlumsky, vocals; Cody Toll, violin; and Keenan Toll, percussion.

The group’s unique instrumentation and improvised harmonies give a fresh sound to their arrangements of popular hits and jazz standards. They cover songs from The Civil Wars to The Beatles.

Everyday Lights started after Austin and Chlumsky were asked by former SA&H staffer Sharon Benson to play a spring 2014 Art A La Carte concert. “We had so much fun that we thought we should get a band together and try to play at the River Festival,” says co-founder Paul Austin. “After playing at the Festival and a couple of other shows, the group made a commitment to keep playing as many gigs as we could in Salina and the surrounding areas.” Since that time, the group has performed for occasions ranging from corporate Christmas parties to fundraisers for charitable causes.

The members of Everyday Lights recently have started writing their own music and may perform an original song “Don’t Bury Me” at the May 15 concert. Austin says, “It is fitting to debut our song at Art a la Carte, since
that is where the inspiration to form Everyday Lights came out of.” For more information, see the Cultural Calendar at salinaarts.com, or like “Everday Lights” on Facebook.

In inclement weather, Art a la Carte performances are held at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe in downtown Salina, at the originally scheduled time. Chapman’s Take Away food truck is on-site at either location for lunchtime fare.
