In conjunction with its Summer Reading Program, Salina Public Library will create family entertainment time by showing movies in June and July.
“Hoosiers,” a film that follows the struggles of a small town, high school basketball team, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. June 4. “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. June 18. This classic tells the story of Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the Depression-era South, who defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge. On July 9, “The Avengers,” the big screen treatment of the Marvel superhero team, will be shown at 6 p.m. Finally, at 6:30 p.m. July 23, follow 73-year-old Alvin as he drives a lawnmower tractor from Iowa to Wisconsin to visit his ill brother in “The Straight Story.” Snacks will be provided at each showing and there will be drawings for door prizes. Families are welcome.
In addition to the showing of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” there will be a presentation on the novel at 7 p.m. June 25. “‘To Kill a Mockingbird’: A Cultural History” will be presented by Topeka/Shawnee County Librarians Valerie Reif and Tanya Walsh. They will discuss the history of Harper Lee’s landmark novel’s publication, its cultural effects and why it has remained a well-loved into the 21st century. There will be a door prize drawing for those who attend.
