Salina-native Lisa Urban’s show “Stitch Stories” will be on display in Salina Public Library’s Gallery 708 July 2 through Aug. 21. A reception for Urban will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. July 2 in conjunction with First Thursday Art Rush.

Urban is currently an artist-in-residence in Navasota, Texas, as well as an arts educator for the Arts Council of Bravos Valley. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kansas State University in Manhattan. She is primarily a painter, but has also begun working with abstract fiber sculpture.

“Stitch Stories” includes oil and gouache works that were inspired by children’s stories and kitted forms.

“Growing up I was always interested in the illustrative and surreal worlds of cartoons, children’s books and Disney movies,” Urban said. “The idea of sitting down and magically being transported to another world was something that I always found comfort in. I find this same comfort when I sit down to knit. No matter what is wrong, both of these experiences make me feel hopeful and magical. As an artist, I am combining these two journeys by recreating the spaces that have inhabited my imagination through the use of knitted forms in an environment.”
