The Kansas City Chiefs will open their 2015 regular season schedule on the road against the AFC South’s Houston Texans on Sunday, September 13. Kickoff at NRG Stadium is slated for 12 p.m. Catch all the action on 99KG (99.9 FM) and KINA (910 AM/94.5 FM).

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid enters his third season with the club after recording 20 wins in his fi rst two seasons, more victories than any other head coach in his first two years in team history. He owns 10 postseason appearances in 16 seasons as a head coach.

In 2014, the Chiefs were in the playoff hunt until the fi nal week of the regular season. The club defeated both Super Bowl participants en route to a 9-7 record and a second-place finish in the AFC West. Kansas City sent four members to the Pro Bowl including running back Jamaal Charles, defensive tackle Dontari Poe and linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

The team utilized all three phases of football, and the season had many success stories. Offensively, Jamaal Charles broke the franchise’s all-time career rushing yards record in Week 7 at San Diego, passing Priest Holmes (6,070). He now has 6,856 yards on 1,249 carries. His 5.5 yards per carry average is more than any other running back in NFL history. Quarterback Alex Smith tallied his third career 3,000-yard season in 2014, throwing for 3,265 yards, 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions, second fewest among regular starters behind Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (5). He notched a 65.3 completion percentage.

The Chiefs were sound defensively as well. Linebacker Justin Houston recorded 22.0 sacks last season, just 0.5 sack shy of Michael Strahan’s NFL record of 22.5 in a single season. Houston broke the team’s single-season sack record previously held by Derrick Thomas (20.0). In the defensive backfield, Kansas City was the only team in the NFL not to give up a completion of 50 or more yards and didn’t surrender to a 300-yard passer all year long despite playing many of the game’s most talented quarterbacks (P. Manning, Brady, Wilson, Roethlisberger, Rivers). Kansas City’s defense gave up only four rushing touchdowns all season.

The team’s 2015 schedule features seven games against six playoff teams from the 2014 season. The club’s 2015 opponents boasted a combined record of 115-92-1 (.555) last season.

In addition to its core group of players and entire coaching staff returning, this offseason the Chiefs acquired more talent to help bolster the roster via the draft, free agency and trade. Kansas City picked up WR Jeremy Maclin, G Ben Grubbs, S Tyvon Branch, CB Marcus Peters and WR Chris Conley, to name a handful. With these additions, along with veteran leaders at all positions, the Chiefs hope for a successful 2015 campaign.

Kansas City finished preseason play as the only unbeaten team in the NFL. The last time the club was perfect in the preseason was 1969 when the club went on to win Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings.
