Community Foundation Announces Over $21,000 in Community Grants

GreaterSalinaCommFoundThe Greater Salina Community Foundation is pleased to announce over $21,000 in grants from two community funds.

The following grants were awarded from the Foundation’s Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund for Saline County. This fund was created in partnership with the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, KS.

  • $4,230 – Lakewood Discovery Center-Alternative Gardening Project – construction materials, signage, and interactive work stations to promote sustainable and healthy living.
  • $5,000 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina – funding for background checks for 50 new volunteers.
  • $3,100 – KWU/The Volunteer Connection – tools, equipment and supplies for volunteers for community service days and tasks.
  • $3,444 – Friends of the River Foundation – funding to bring Jeff Shoemaker, The Greenway Foundation Executive Director to Salina for a 1 day symposium
  • $4,498 – Discover Salina Naturally – supplies and publicity for Discover Salina Naturally, a free event on May 1 to introduce families to the natural world and the need for a responsible and sustainable future.

In addition, the Foundation awarded the following grant from the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund. Mr. Mullen was a self-taught engineer and inventor. He was a life-long Salina native who valued innovation and education. According to his wishes, the Foundation established a field of interest fund to create grants for the education of youth in the areas of arts and humanities, technology, invention and science.

  • $1,400 – Lakewood Discovery Center – Interactive Science Stations to promote the benefits of learning about nature and spending time outdoors

$21,672 Total Grants Awarded

Grant applications are currently being accepted through Greater Salina Community Foundation’s new grant application process. Available grant funding from the Foundation’s unrestricted fund and several field of interest funds moved to a year-round grant cycle on July 1, 2015.

This change allows charitable projects to be funded on a timelier basis. It also makes the application process more convenient for applicants, as they will no longer be restricted to a specific date or time of year in order to apply.

Those interested in applying can find grant guidelines and supporting information on the Foundation’s website, www.gscf.org. Applicants will complete one universal application, GSCF Grants.  Only applications on the Foundation’s online system will be accepted. The GSCF grants committee will meet bi-monthly to determine grant recipients.
