Margaret Lucile Furbeck was born March 21, 1920 to Harold and Jane Munger in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. The family moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Margaret was raised and attended schools with her brother, Elmer and sister, Julia. Margaret graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Home Economics Education and later received a degree in elementary education.
Margaret married Paul L. Furbeck December 1, 1939. They raised their children, Patricia (George)Taplin, Richard (Trudy)Furbeck, Rebecca (Marc)Polzella, and Jacqueline Furbeck Staab on their farm south of Abilene, next to Brown’s Park. She was the proud grandmother of Frank Taplin, Seth Taplin, Julie Weishaar, Nancy Daharsh, Sarah Lemley, Jessica Polzella-Wilmore, Travis Staab, Katie Staab Folkerts, and Jared Staab. There are fifteen great-grand children.
Margaret influenced and taught hundreds of students while teaching second grade at McKinley Elementary School in Abilene, Kansas for twenty-seven years. To the end, she remembered fondly her boys and girls. It delighted her to have former students remind her, “You were my second grade teacher!”
Her faith in her Lord Jesus Christ never waivered or failed. She lived her beliefs daily. She taught Sunday School, was an active Luther League leader and helped with the women’s group at Trinity Lutheran Church in Abilene. After retiring from teaching school, Margaret volunteered weekly at the Abilene Food and Clothing Bank.
The Parker Carousel at the Dickinson County Historical Society was one of Paul and Margaret’s special interests. One of the horses, “Sugar” was adopted and maintained by Margaret. All visiting children were treated to rides on the carousel for as long as Margaret could travel.
Both Paul and Margaret loved attending the theatre productions at the Great Plains Theatre Festival. For ten years, she helped with hosting cast picnics, sewing costumes, and providing support as needed for the theatre family.
Each of her children and grandchildren has been blessed with one of Margaret’s intricate, hand-pieced quilts to keep as a treasure. She spent her entire adult life sewing clothes for family members, piecing quilts, and mending and repairing.
Margaret and Paul took great delight in the “cabin” they built in the Rocky Mountains in Nederland, Colorado. Many warm memories were made with family and friends while visiting there.
She is now at rest in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior … and back with her beloved Paul, at last.
Interment will be at the Abilene Cemetery at 11:00 am November 27th. A celebration of her beautiful life will then be held at the Senior Center at 12:00 noon when her friends, family and loved ones can gather to celebrate the gift of her life. Come join us for food, fellowship, songs of worship and wonderful memories.

The kindness and loving care that Margaret received from her family, Dorothy Williams, Village Manor and Hospice of Dickinson County are greatly appreciated by her family. She reminded her children often how grateful she was for the excellent care she was given. Thank you so very much.

Simply put, she lived it, she didn’t just say it, and it will impact her loved ones for generations to come.
