Phyllis L. Sherwood, the daughter of George Moxham and Fannie (Williams) Moxham, was born July 25, 1919, at rural Belleville, KS, and passed away September 19, 2015, at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS, at the age of 96 years, 1 month, and 20 days.
Phyllis grew up in Republic County, attending Milner Grade School and later Belleville High School, Belleville, KS, from which she graduated at the age of 16. She then attended Kansas State Teacher’s College, Emporia, KS. After earning her teaching certificate, she taught grades 1-8 for a few years before her marriage, her last school being at Beatty, KS.
She and her husband farmed in southern Republic County just north of Concordia, KS. For several years, she managed an 1100-bird laying-hen operation on the farm. Like most farm wives of the time, she gardened, canned and froze food, took meals to the field, sewed, and assisted with the family dairy. She kept accounts for their diversified farming operation and, later, became bookkeeper for the Concordia Blade Empire in Concordia, KS, also managing the Blade’s papers boys.
On June 18, 1944, she was united in marriage to Kenneth M. Sherwood, and to this union 5 children were born: Tana, twins Kent and Keith, Dyna, and Gregg.
Phyllis’ religious faith was the touchstone of her life. She was a member of the Talmo Methodist Church where she was especially active in youth groups, teaching Sunday School, organizing Vacation Bible School and special Christmas and Easter services, and mentoring the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was involved in adult worship as well, holding offices in United Methodist Women, serving as Lay Leader, participating in Bible studies, and providing financial support. Later, when she could no longer stay on the farm, she moved her membership to the Belleville United Methodist Church.
Phyllis was an accomplished organist and pianist, playing for church services and other events, along with giving piano lessons and accompanying many award-winning musical ensembles. She had an active interest in extension service work, the dispensing of information to farm families being so important to her, and was a member of the Lincoln Extension Unit. She also was a member of the Republic County Farm Bureau, serving for many years on the Policy Committee with her husband. She had been a 4-H member and was a project leader for the Talmo-Wayne Thrifty Workers 4-H Club. She was also active in the Neighborhood Club.
Phyllis loved to travel, always wanting to see what was “over the next hill.” On numerous road trips, she and her husband explored most of the 48 contiguous US states and Canada, visiting family and friends along the way. In her early 70s, she travelled to England with a daughter, her sister Gweneth, and a niece to visit family.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth, in 2001; son, Kent, in 1965, and her sister, Ruth Snyder.
Phyllis is survived by two sons, Keith (Anita) Sherwood of McPherson, KS, and Gregg Sherwood of Albany, MO; two daughters, Tana (Eldon) Trost of rural Belleville, KS, and Dyna (Jim) O’Dea of Manhattan, KS; 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Richardson of Belleville, KS, Gweneth Eickman of Beatrice, NE, and Velma June Stauffer of Boulder City, NV; other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, September 25, 2015, at the Belleville United Methodist Church with the Reverend Emily Meckley officiating.
Interment will be at the Zion Cemetery, rural Belleville, KS.
Visitation is from 1 PM until 9 PM on Wednesday and from 9 AM until 9 PM on Thursday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS, where the family will greet friends from 7 PM until 9 PM on Thursday.
