Police Investigating Scam Attempts

Salina PD ShieldSalina Police are investigating two scam attempts that occurred Thursday evening.

Captain Mike Sweeney said officers were first called to Holiday Inn Express, 3145 S. 9th, at about 6:45 p.m., after a man identifying himself as Robert with the City of Salina called the hotel and advised them that the business had a past due water bill.

The man went on to say if the bill was not paid within two hours, water service would be shut off. Hotel management checked and found the bill was current. They also became suspicious by the time of day of the call as city offices close at 5 p.m.

Then, a 61-year-old woman called police just after 7 p.m. to report that she had discovered a message from a man on her telephone answering machine claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. The man, who had a thick accent, identified himself as Brian Murphy and said that an arrest warrant had been issued for her. He stated that she needed to call 425-374-4784 to resolve an issue with money she owed to the agency. She called police instead.
