Four of Saline County’s six high schools are headed to the playoffs.
The Southeast of Saline Trojans (7-2) will travel to Halstead on Tuesday to face the undefeated Dragons in a 7 p.m. kickoff in a Class 3A playoff contest that can be heard on KINA 910 AM. Halstead shut the door on the Trojans season a year ago in the opening round of the playoffs with a 54-13 victory.
Other Saline County schools in the playoffs include St. John’s Military School. The Muleskinners, 2-7, will travel to St. Mary’s Academy, 4-3, for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Tuesday. St. John’s returns to the playoffs in their first season under returning head coach Mike Reid. Their last post-season appearance came in 2013.
The Salina South Cougars, 5-4, travel to Wichita on Friday for yet another Class 5A post-season battle with Bishop Carroll. The Golden Eagles, 8-1, enter the post-season with an 8 game winning streak. This will be the fourth consecutive post-season meeting between the two schools. Bishop Carroll defeated South in two sub-state championship games (2012 and 2014) and the Cougars topped the Golden Eagles in a sectional playoff game in 2013.
Also on Friday, the Sacred Heart Knights (5-4) travel to Phillipsburg to face the 7-2 Panthers in a Class 2-1A playoff match-up at 7 p.m. It was Phillipsburg that outlasted Sacred Heart in a regional playoff game in 2014, with a 22-15 double overtime win.
Noticeably missing from the post-season are two other Saline County schools. Ell-Saline, who played in the Class 2-1A State Championship game a year ago, finished the 2015 season with a record of 3-6. Salina Central, who made a playoff appearance a year ago, came up just short of returning to the post-season this year. The Mustangs finished their 2015 campaign with an overall record of 4-5 and 1-2 in district play.
