Introducing Kelley Hulteen, your BANK VI Hero of the Week!

Kelley was nominated for selflessly giving back to those in need in the community.

Kelley, a Certified Occupational Therapist at Smoky Hill Rehabilitation in Salina, spent eight years assisting a former Salina elderly couple named Bill and Verna. Kelley used to be a painter, and while at the couple’s house doing an estimate several years ago, she found the home to be in an almost unliveable condition. The home, which the couple had lived in for nearly a half century, had not been cared for in several years and the couple had no family to help out.

So, each week, Kelley would drop by and do things like mowing the lawn, with the help of her son, and grocery shopping. She also helped with the upkeep of the home. She did this until Verna passed away. After that, she helped Bill find a nursing home, where he remained until his passing.

Kelley said she had a conversation with God that convinced her that she was doing the right thing. “I don’t have time for this, but I knew was there to do it,” she said

While in school to become an occupational therapist, Kelley assisted another woman in her class and the woman’s young son. She picked them up and took the boy to daycare and the woman rode with her to class.

Prior to working at Smoky Hill, Kelley worked at Mt. Joseph Senior Living, a retirement home for nuns in Concordia. Even though she no longer works there, Kelley still drives up to Concordia at least once a month to visit and read to the nuns.

Helping out those in need is something Kelley truly enjoys. “You can find people that need something everywhere,” she said.
