An undetermined amount of cash was taken in a motel robbery early Saturday morning.

Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said the suspect entered the Howard Johnson Motel, 222 E. Diamond Drive, about 12:45 a.m. and inquired about renting a room.

When he could not provide any identification, he left.

A short time later, while the clerk was doing some maintenance work, the suspect returned, hit the clerk on the left side of his face, went around the counter, opened the cash register, took money and left the motel in an eastbound direction.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 28-30 years of age, 5’8″, medium build, a little facial hair, and wearing a black coat with “ATLANTA” on the back of the coat.

The suspect also met a white female that was wearing a white coat and white cap outside the motel.

The 60-year-old clerk did not report the incident until about 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning. Captain Sweeney said the clerk did have a bruise on the left side of his face, but did not require any medical treatment.
