A Salina man shooting tracer rounds from a rifle Sunday afternoon started a fire in the 9300 block of Donmyer Road.

Saline County Sheriff’s Captain Roger Soldan said the man called to report the fire Sunday afternoon, but left before a deputy or the fire units arrived. The man did call the Sheriff’s Office on Monday to explain what happened. About 100 yards of pasture grass was burned by fire.

Soldan said the man was shooting the rounds into a berm, but did not have permission to shoot his rifle at the location.

No charges against the man have been filed, but are still possible.
