Women’s History Month Celebrations in Salina

WomensHistoryWomen’s History Month will be celebrated by two Salina organizations on March 19th at 10:30 a.m. at the Salina Art Center Cinema. The public is invited to join them for the 1985 classic documentary, “Women of Summer.” The event is a collaboration between the Salina Art Center Cinema, the AAUW SALINA (KS) Branch and the Salina League of Women Voters.

The film is a reunion of the working women who participated in Bryn Mawr’s Summer School for Women Workers in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

This film recounts the history of the summer program as seen through the eyes of alumnae fifty years later at a specially planned reunion. Folksingers Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert are on hand to celebrate the occasion. Time has not dimmed the spirit and intellect of the graduates, who talk with passion about their lives in factories, mills, and unions. They recount the experience of living through the Depression, the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti, and the New Deal.

It provides a provocative, yet heart-warming overview of the program’s sponsorship by wealthy corporate donors who suddenly become threatened by the program’s, and the women’s, success.
