UPDATE: Police have arrested a suspect in connection with an early morning shooting death at a Salina motel.

Captain Chris Trocheck tells The Salina Post that officers arrested the suspect after a brief pursuit and short foot chase in the area of 7th and Lincoln in north Salina.

Police were initially called to the Starlite Motel, 211 E. Pacific, just after 6 a.m. on a report of several shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a black male in his 30s in the north parking lot of the motel. According to Trocheck, the man had died of at least one gunshot wound.

Officers began an immediate search of the area for a suspect, described as a black male armed with a .22 caliber handgun wearing a red and black hoodie and dark pants.

Just after 8:30 a.m., an officer spotted a man matching that description in a white pickup. A short high speed pursuit ensued.

Trocheck said the vehicle was initially spotted traveling east on State Street, when it then moved toward some railroad tracks. The vehicle continued east along the tracks until it was blocked by a train. It then turned around and headed back the other direction. The pickup traveled on south on Santa Fe and then veered west along the tracks, when it got stuck in a vacant lot near the intersection of 7th and Lincoln. Two occupants of the truck then bailed out and led officers on a short foot chase before they were both captured.

Trocheck said one of the occupants is believed to be connected to the shooting, while the other may not be. He said that officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder.

The names of the suspect and the victim have not been released.

According to Trocheck, more information is expected to be released by Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson on Wednesday.
