6373784_220w_1Merce B. Martinez, 75, of Salina, passed away May 17, 2016. She was born September 24th, 1940 in Fashing, TX to Antonio and Caridad Benavidez. She retired in 2006 from King Windows in Salina. Her first employer in Salina was Tony’s Pizza in 1970. She then took employment for the USD 305 Salina Central High School cafeteria. Following was REMA Bakeware in Salina, Russell Stover’s of Abilene and then King Windows.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mariano MartinezJr., brothers Ausencio Benavidez Sr (Olivia)., Paul Benavidez (Ophelia dec.), Felipe Benavidez (Felicita), and sisters Felicidad Hood, Longina Benavidez, and Dominga Benavidez.

Survivors include her daughter, Melissa Martinez (Jose Rodriguez) of Salina and son, Marcos B Martinez of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Jacob MarianoMartinez and Lilyana Merced Rodriguez; brother, Javier Benavidez (Herminia) of Kyle, TX and sisters, Margarita “Margie” (Lino) Garcia of Floydada, TX and Consuelo “Connie” (Joe) Castaneda of Midland TX. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Juanita (Mario) Martinez of Assaria, Bea Robles of Delphos and her brother-in-law Pedro Martinez of Emporia, KS who have been in her life in Salina and have treated her as their own sister. Merce was part of a large extended family that included many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends that she held close to heart and loved dearly.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 22nd from 2 to 7pm at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford Salina with family receiving guests from 5 to 7. Funeral services will be held on Monday May 23rd, 2:00pm at First Church of the Nazarene, 1425 S. Ohio, Salina, with burial following at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Edwin Lee “Corky” Simmelink, 77, of Salina, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, after complications from cancer. He was born Sept. 28, 1938, to Maurice and Pauline (Brinkworth) Simmelink in Ionia, Kan.

Edwin spent his career working as a shop superintendent and parts manager for Foley Tractor Co. and Smoky Hill, Inc. He was a member of Church of the Cross United Methodist, Salina, and served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, of the home; daughter, Teresa Simmelink, son, Brian Simmelink, and grandson, Alec Simmelink, all of Wichita; brother, Don Simmelink and wife Shirley; sister, Jane Patton and husband Jerry; nieces and nephews; and many, many, many friends.

There will be a visitation from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 20, with family receiving friends from 6-8, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at United Methodist Church of the Cross in Salina. Burial will follow in Ionia Cemetery, Ionia.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to United Methodist Church of the Cross or Ionia United Methodist Church, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Wanda M. Patterson, 91, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at Presbyterian Manor. She was born June 11, 1924, in Lincoln to Archie Sheldon and Amanda Kathryn (Feldkamp) Moss.

Wanda graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita. She married Dale Patterson in November 1945 in Tampa. He passed away Jan. 23, 2015.

Survivors: son, Joseph (Elaine) Patterson, of Blue Springs, Mo.; six grandchildren, Greg, Lori, Jon, Lindsey, Jenny and Jeff; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Dale; son, Greggory Patterson; sister, Betty Hughes; and brother, Gene Moss.

Inurnment: 9 a.m. Monday, May 23, at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials: Presbyterian Manor in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Ronda Sue Kasiska, 52, passed away May 18, 2016. She was born May 26, 1963, to Mary “Pat” Patricia (Markham) and Ronald F. Lloyd in Pryor, OK.

Ronda married Ernst Kasiska on October 17, 1981 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. She was an Administrator at the Ellsworth County Health Department.

Ronda is survived by her husband, Ernie Kasiska of Kanopolis; daughter, Lynsey Schultz (Andy) of Ellsworth; son, Joshua Kasiska (Lindsay) of Shawnee; sister, Karen Israel of Norman, OK; grandchildren, Jazlynn and Owen Schultz of Ellsworth; and aunt, Susan Metzger of Hot Springs, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Sidney “Butch” and Timothy Lloyd.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 23, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ellsworth.

vet_ffffffJohn Bruce Brown, 72, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Wilson, Kansas.

John was born at the family home on July 14, 1943 in Quenemo, Kansas, the son of Orlin and Iva (Watkins) Brown.  He grew up and attended school in Ellinwood and Great Bend, Kansas. 

John served his country in the Army Reserves for 26 years and where he had the rank of Staff Sergeant.

John lived in the Russell, Kansas area from 1972 to 1996.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Sandra K. Nuss on February 16, 1965, in Great Bend, Kansas.  From this union John and Sandra were blessed with 2 daughters Melodie and Misty.  Later, unfortunately John and Sandra divorced in 1987.  During that time he was the general manager for Russell Tire.  Then in 1996 he moved to Wichita, Kansas where he worked for Old Mission Cemetery as a laborer.  He retired in 2005 and returned to the Russell area.  He was a member of National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating with his family.

Surviving family include his ex-wife Sandra Brown and his two daughters, Melodie Anschutz (Derrick) of Russell, Kansas and Misty Brown (Michael Werth) of Russell, Kansas; and two grandchildren, David Brown and Jordan Werth.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bernice Nightengale, and two brothers James Brown and Walter Brown.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May 23, 2016 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.  No visitation will be held, cremation has preceded the services.  Family will greet guests the day of the service.  Memorials may be given to the John B. Brown Memorial Fund and sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
