The Salina Heritage Commission will consider an application to raze the former Medaille Center at the corner of Ash and Oakdale at its next meeting.

Permission is being requested to demolish the structure on the west side of the former St. John’s Hospital, so that it can be redeveloped into an apartment complex.

Blue Beacon/Lighthouse Properties is purchasing the existing structire from Sunflower St. Johns, LLC, and that sale is expected to close in about 30 days if the commission approves the application, according to Don Boos, director of real estate for Lighthouse Properties, the hotels division of Blue Beacon.

In order for building to redeveloped into an apartment complex, parking spaces will be needed, and an adjoining, one-story building will have to be demolished.

Permission to raze the Medaille Center is needed from the commission because the building is attached to the former St. John’s Hospital, which has historical significance.

The commission meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Room 107 of the City-County Building.

Official plans for the Medaille Center, which was once home to the Sisters of St. Joseph and most recently was a temporary home for the Saline County Health Department, have not yet been finalized and are expected to be announced in the future.
