Pilot Forced to Make Emergency Landing

Saline County Sheriff BadgeA Saline County pilot was forced to make an emergency landing Saturday morning when the airplane he was flying began to have engine problems.

Saline County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Smith said 68-year-old Terry Burger was flying a 1936 Beechcraft D-17 biplane just after 9:30 a.m. from Salina to Wichita, when he began to experience engine trouble.

Burger was forced to make an emergency landing in a soybean field in the 5000 block of S. Fairchilds Road. He was not hurt.

The aircraft sustained damage to the front cowling, the engine and the propeller.

Damage estimates were not immediately available due to the rarity of the aircraft, according to Smith.
