shirley-kelley-1476371521Shirley Jean Kelley, 83, of Abilene, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 12th, at Salina Regional Health Center.

Shirley was born in Keokuk, Iowa on December 15, 1932, to the late Hazel (Tessaru) and Raymon Groves.

She was the wife of George Kelley, Sr.

Survivors include her husband; sons, George Kelley, Jr. and his wife Michelle, of Abilene, Kansas; and Ralph Kelley and his wife Michelle, of Althel, Idaho; as well as 7 grandchildren and 11 great grand children.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, sister, June Rairden and great grandson, Taeshawn Matthews.

Cremation has been chosen and there is no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17th, with Pastor Jon Fillipi officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home to defray funeral expenses.

Betty J. Swaim, 91, of Glasco, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 12th.

Betty was born in Delphos, Kansas on January 11, 1925, to Maude (Bennett) and David Campbell.

Survivors include son, Greg Wyatt; daughter, June Treffer; sisters, Maudyna White and Virginia (LeRoy) Yount; as well as 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Loyd Wyatt and Michael Swaim; 9 sisters and 2 brothers.

Private graveside services will be held at Glasco Cemetery.

Andy Ray Garcia, 38, of Salina, passed away Monday, October 10th.

Andy was born in Gallup, NM on October 26, 1977, to Johnny Ray Garcia and Barbara (McKinney) Garcia.

Survivors include his parents, sisters Barbara Jean Halliwell, of Manhattan, Kansas, and Linda Garcia-Hansen, of Lincoln, Nebraska; as well as his signficant other, Jamie Bonilla, of Salina.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elitta Marie Bonilla.

Cremation has been chosen and a Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2016 at New Beginnings, 321 N Santa Fe Ave, Salina.

3942307_wlppDarlene A. Bachamp, age 75, left this earthly life on Wed., Oct. 12, 2106 at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. She was born on Aug. 31, 1941 in Colfax Twp, Cloud Co., KS to Richard V. & Adelaide L. (Gunter) Marcotte.

Darlene graduated from Aurora High School in 1959 and Brown Mackie Business College, Salina. She married Gearld Bachamp on May 28, 1960 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Aurora, KS. Darlene worked at St. Joseph Hospital for 43 years. She also operated her own interior decorating business, Darlene’s Touch along with making wedding & birthday cakes for many years for family & friends. She also helped with the family business, Gearld’s Body Shop. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia where she played the organ, taught religious education classes, was involved in CYO and was a member of the Altar Society. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Gearld, Concordia; daughters, Maria Chrisco (John), Baldwin City & Dr. Monica Bachamp Easter (Jeff), Salina; sons, Mark Bachamp (Betty), Manhattan & Michael Bachamp (Iolanda) & Ricardo Luz (Cleusa), both of Lynn Haven, FL; grandchildren & great grandchildren: Cole Bachamp (Bailey), Kyle Bachamp, Krista Dewitt (Tyler) and son, Paxton; Whitney Schroeder (Jason) & children, Harrison, Holden & Aurora; Macey Hundley, Lane Bachamp (Jessica) & children, Cameron, Greyson & Jameson; Adelaide Easter; Taylor, Sydney, Raef, Kennedy & Bryer Chrisco & Gaspar Luz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Jefferey Eugene Easter, Jr. & 4 infant grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Mon., Oct. 17, 2016 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia with Fr. David Metz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Concordia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-8 pm, Sun., Oct. 16, 2016 with a Vigil and Altar Society Rosary at 5 pm, and family greeting friends after the vigil services at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia. Ruth E. Varney, 89, died October 12, 2016 at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River.  She was born on March 5, 1927 at Rozel, Kansas the daughter of Thomas J. and Zora Frick Murphy.  She was a homemaker and lifetime resident of Sterling.  On July 30, 1960 she married Arthur H. Varney at Little River.  He died on November 15, 1992.  She is survived by her daughter Joleen and husband Terry Larkin of Sterling.  4 Grandchildren and 5 Great-Grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her son Scott Varney, Great-Granddaughter, Emmylee Strong, 1 sister and 7 brothers.  Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Sterling Community Cemetery with Rev. William Runyon officiating.  Memorials are suggested to the Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River in care of Birzer Funeral Home of Sterling.

(July 2, 1954 – October 8, 2016) 

Lynn L. “Toad” Hudson, 62, Greenleaf, died Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Via Christie in Manhattan.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Ward Funeral Home in Greenleaf with Father Joseph Kieffer officiating.

Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Kimeo.

Toad was born on July 2, 1954 at Smith Center, KS to Bert and Betty (Eller) Hudson. He graduated from Stockton High School in Stockton, KS in 1972. Toad started working at the age of 14 with a harvest crew and after high school, went to work as a heavy equipment operator on road construction. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.

Toad and a friend ran a bar together, for several years, until the friends’ death. Toad was diagnosed July 2015 with stage 4 lung cancer and fought very hard till his death.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

He is survived by cousins and many friends.

A memorial fund is established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.

thumbnailDarlene Ann (Hammersmith) Mattas, 81, of Wilson, passed away October 9, 2016 in Salina.
Darlene was born July 19, 1935, in Gorham, Kansas, the daughter of Alfonse and Silvernina Hammersmith. She grew up and attended school in Gorham. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Francis John Befort in Plainville, Kansas. This union was blessed with two daughters: Rosemary Anne and Margaret. Francis passed away in 1961. Darlene was fortunate to find love a second time and was united in marriage to Ernest (Ernie) J. Mattas, Jr. on July 25, 1964 in Gorham. Together they made their home on a farm east of Wilson. From this union they were blessed with a daughter Bernadette. Ernie preceded her in death on February 18, 2007.
Darlene worked at Safeway in Russell while living in Gorham. After moving to Wilson, she was an active member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and Altar Society. She served as past Regent for the D of I and was President of Altar Society. She also taught catechism for many years. She was a talented cake decorator and set up many wedding receptions. She was involved as project leader for 4H. Later in life, she enjoyed baking kolaches, cinnamon rolls, bierochs, making noodles, and was a Watkin’s Products saleswoman. He artistic and creativity was seen in her sewing projects, Cameo painting and quilt making. She was a devoted farmer’s wife, homemaker, and mother.
Surviving family includes her daughters; Rosemary Anne Befort Shiever and husband Andre Zane of Salina; Margaret Befort Heart of Hays, Bernadette Mattas Franks and husband Jeff of Russell; a sister, Virginia Rathbun and husband James of Natoma; a brother Al Hammersmith and wife Mary of Hutchinson; five grandchildren, Kevin Fishburn, Jr. of Wichita, Ernie Hart of Wilson, Michael Heart of Newton, Lauren Franks and Jonathon Franks, both of Russell. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Francis John and Ernest; two infant brothers, Marvin and Martin, and an infant sister, Mary.

Vicky Sue Mader, 71, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

A funeral mass to celebrate Vicky’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell with Father Michael Elan officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Monday, October 17, 2016 at the mortuary.  A Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7 P.M. on Monday, October 17, 2016, at the church.  Memorials may be given to the High Plains Humane Society and may be sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
