dal61014Carol Patricia (Iwicki Carlson) D’Albini, 80, of Salina, passed away after a long illness Friday, Oct. 14, 2016. She was born June 13, 1936, to Doris Iwicki in Chicago.

Carol grew up on a farm outside of Chicago, where she attended grade school and high school. She met and married Fred D’Albini while attending college and teaching school in Texas.

In August 1970, the D’Albini family moved to Salina to open the first McDonald’s restaurant in Salina. Carol traveled across Kansas to promote the restaurant.

Carol was the owner of the Mode O’ Day store in downtown Salina from 1971 until 1975. She also helped to organize and promote the McDonald’s/Marymount Basketball Tournament. She and her husband opened two more Salina McDonald’s, then purchased and opened stores in Junction City.

Carol worked with interior designer, Gail Jones, to design interiors for all of the McDonald’s restaurants. She also came up with the slogan and illustration for the slogan that was used for the advertising of the Salina McDonald’s franchise “Golden Arches Across Salina.”

Carol was an active member of the Salina community. She was part of every PTA organization in the schools her five children attended.

Carol was elected to the Salina Public School Board for three terms and was one of the founders of the Salina Education Foundation.

As a young woman, Carol played baseball for a Chicago semi-pro women’s baseball team. She was an avid bowler, placing first in many local and state tournaments and going to Las Vegas for national tournaments. Carol was still playing co-ed softball at the age of 57.

Carol is survived by her sister, Joyce Smith (Glenn) Stoker, of Jefferson City, Mo.; her five children: sons, David (Julia), of Salina, Dan, of the home, and Doug (Lesley), of Spring Hill; daughters, Patti (Mark) D’Albini Hecker, of Kanopolis Lake, and Pam (Leo) McCallen, of Cincinnati.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her aunt, Elaine Iwicki; several nephews and a niece; one great-niece; and a great-nephew.

She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather; her uncle, Robert Iwicki, who was like a father to her; and her husband of 37 years, Frederick Carl D’Albini.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Ryan Mortuary.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Ryan Mortuary, with burial following in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made in memory of Carol D’Albini to the Salina Education Foundation, 1511 Gypsum Ave., Salina 67401.

ree61008Jack D. Reeves, 63, of Salina, passed away Oct. 8, 2016. He was born in Rogers, Ark., to the late William “Shorty” and Leta Reeves on Oct. 15, 1952.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa, of the home; children, James Reeves and Jason Reeves, both of Salina, Christopher Reeves and Amanda Reeves; mother, Leta Reeves; grandchildren, Orion, Serenity and Kyle; stepdaughters, Brianna and Chalee Soipher; sister, Judy and Steve McGee, of Salina; brother, Jerry and Lil Reeves, of Tucson, Ariz.; and half sister, Jean Ann McCreary, of Green Forest, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Reeves.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in Roselawn Memorial Park.

dol61013Mary B. Dolan, 83, of Salina, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016. She was born Jan. 14, 1933, in Houston to the late John Peter and Maie (Richardson) Dolan.

Mary’s father was killed in a car accident when she was 7 weeks old. She and her mother moved to Beatrice, Neb., to be with her family. Mary’s mother started teaching her to play the piano when she was 3 and starting taking lessons at age 6. She also played the clarinet in band for nine years.

Mary graduated from Clyde Rural High School and graduated from Kansas State University and got her bachelor’s degree in human ecology and elementary education and her master’s in 1963 from Emporia State University. She taught second, third and fourth grades. She retired from teaching in 2000 after more than 40 years of teaching.

Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and was a religious educator for many years. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters and was greeter at Mass. She enjoyed spending time in Wisconsin with her relatives celebrating the Irish Fest. Mary had a tremendously big heart and always had a smile on her face.

Mary didn’t have much family, but she had many friends who will miss her deeply. A special thank you to the Eaglecrest Retirement Community for their loving and passionate care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Sacred Heart Cathedral with Father Andrew Rockers officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will begin that morning at 10 a.m. at the church.

rob61012Trudi R. Robinson, 53, of Salina, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016. She was born May 30, 1963, in Liberal to Carole Criswell.

Trudi was a cheerleading and gymnastics coach for many years at Seward County Community College in Liberal. She worked as a scanning manager at Dillions store 95 in Salina. Her daughter, Trinity, age 9, wants everyone to know that “She was the best mom ever!”

Left to mourn her passing is her husband, Trent, and daughter, Trinity, both of the home; son, Tyler of Lansing; mother and stepfather, Carole and John Arellano, of Garland, Texas; grandson, Max Robinson, of Omaha, Neb.; siblings, Jean and Darin Thomas, of Mansfield, Texas, and Bruce and Tina Crawford, of Garland; father-in-law, Kennith Robinson; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leroy Taylor; grandparents, Jiggs and Lenzy Criswell; and mother-in-law, Opal Robinson.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at First Southern Baptist Church, 2401 S. Ohio, with Pastor Greg Savage officiating.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Classical School and are in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Memorial services will be at 11 AM Saturday, October 22 at the Glasco United Methodist Church. Per his wishes, cremation was chosen & there will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to Glasco United Methodist Church, Solomon Valley Hospice, or the Golden Living Center.

paul-smith-1476621177vet_ffffffPaul Loren Smith, son of Lee C. and Mayme (Rump) Smith, was born November 14, 1928, at McPherson. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at Pleasant View Home in Inman. He was 87.

At the age of six, Paul contracted dust pneumonia and had a long recovery as Penicillin was not available. The result being he had to start school a year late. He graduated from the eighth grade at Groveland School in Groveland, KS and from McPherson High School in 1947. Paul was chosen to be a member of the National Honors Society of secondary schools. As a young man, he was baptized in the First Christian Church in McPherson.

Paul was 17 years old when his family moved to his mother’s family farmstead, and he resided there for the remainder of his life, except for the past few months when declining health made it necessary for him to move to a nursing home.

From 1953 to 1955, Paul served in the U.S Army as a radio operator in Korea, attaining the rank of Corporal.

Paul enjoyed roller skating and met his future wife, Sonja K. Mark, at Peterson’s Roller Rink in McPherson. Paul and Sonja were united in marriage on July 13, 1958, at the First Congregational Church in McPherson by Rev. Alfred Bartter. After the wedding, they went on a honeymoon trip to San Francisco, CA.

A lifelong farmer and rancher, Paul grew crops of wheat and milo and also raised cattle, hogs, and chickens. Paul and his father used to harvest wheat with a pull-type Baldwin combine, which is now at the Inman Museum. They later enjoyed the convenience of a self-propelled combine.

Paul will be remembered as a loving husband, son, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include: his wife, Sonja of the home; a son, Loren Smith of the home; a daughter, Cara Dietterich (John) of Rochester, MN; a sister, LaVonne Williams (Lowell) of Galva, KS; and two grandsons, Maxfield and Samuel Dietterich of Rochester, MN.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 N. Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
