Bernard “Barney” Rohde, 87, died October 19, 2016 in Clay Center, KS. He was born on November 27, 1928 in Austin, Minnesota, the son of George and Millie (Barnett) Rohde. Barney was raised in Minnesota and Iowa. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 and served in WWII. In 1949, Barney enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea and Viet Nam. During his service time, he earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star. He retired from the Army in 1969. Barney married Patsy Hunsinger in 1954. After leaving the Army, Barney worked in the maintenance department at Kansas State University, retiring in 1978. Patsy preceded him in death in 1985. In 1989, Barney married Billie Griffiths and they made their home in Clay Center. Billie preceded him in death in 2014. Barney was a member of the Masonic Lodge, life member of the V.F.W where he was past Commander, American Legion, Lions Club, O.E.S. Isis Shrine and served as a volunteer for Meadowlark Hospice. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Julie; his parents, a sister and 5 brothers.

Donna Marie Thompson, 82 of Abilene passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Enterprise Estates Nursing Home. She was born June 14, 1934 in Olsburg, Kansas, the daughter of Howard and Isabelle Duncan. On June 14, 1986 she was united in marriage to Clarence Thompson South of Abilene. Donna worked for twenty years as an alcohol and drug counselor for Dickinson Co. Council and Alcohol and other Drugs Inc. Donna is survived by her loving husband Clarence of the home. Two daughters, Barbara Burt and Jerri Slecher and one son, Charles Stevenson. Two step-daughters, Cindy Kelley and Julie Wilson and one step-son, Kim Thompson and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service for Donna will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials be given to the Hospice of Dickinson County. Cindy L. Hiesterman, 59, of Barnes, KS, died Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Hanover Hospital.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Linn. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 26 at Immanuel Lutheran Church west of Linn.
Burial will be at God’s Hill south of Barnes.

Leon Edwin Grizzle, 87, of Russell, Kansas, died
on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at the Main Street Manor in the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.
Leon was born on June 01, 1929, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the son of Richard Theophilous and Venus Vivian (Patterson) Grizzle. He grew up in Oklahoma City and Enid, Oklahoma areas and attended local schools. Later he joined the United States Army and fought in the Korean war. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Ernestine M. Butler on August 30, 1952 in Enid, Oklahoma. From this union Leon and Ernestine were blessed with 3 sons Phillip, Robert and Richard; 2 daughters Patricia and Theresa. In 1958, Leon moved his family to Russell, Kansas. He went to work for Shields Oil Producers for 20 plus years. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years. He was also a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed fishing and hunting but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his many grandchildren.
Surviving family include three sons, Phillip Grizzle (Kim) of Russell, Kansas, Robert Grizzle (Dorothy) of Eudora, Kansas and Richard Grizzle of Hays, Kansas; two daughters, Patricia Dillon of Russell, Kansas and Theresa Ehrlich (Ron) of Hays, Kansas; brother Paul Grizzle (Jeanne) of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ernestine on March 27, 2012, brothers Richard A. Grizzle and Bill Grizzle; daughter in-law Mary Grizzle and grandson, Christopher Ehrlich.
Celebration of Leon’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with Pastor David Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM on Monday, October 24, 2016, at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM Monday evening. A memorial has been established with First Southern Baptist Church in Russell and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Arlene Fern Krug, 89, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.
Arlene was born on April 14, 1927, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Alex G. and Hedwig (Haberer) Krug. She grew up in Russell, attended Russell Schools and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1945. After high school, she moved away to begin her career working in the Art Department at Hallmark in Kansas City. Later she started her lifelong career working as an Airline ticket counter and passenger service attendant for Braniff Airlines out of Kansas City. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to take an airline position for Western Airlines. She worked 27 years for Western Airlines and eventually retired from Delta Airlines in 1991. She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and was active in her Las Vegas church council. She was very active with the Deines Cultural Center in Russell and a member of the Russell Historical Society. She enjoyed art, photography, stained glass, oil painting and painting with water colors.
Surviving family include her sister Norma Fink of Russell, Kansas and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harold L. Krug in 1994 and infant brother Leo A. Krug.
A celebration of Arlene’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 24, 2016, at the small chapel in St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. There will be no viewing and visitation with the family will take place before and after the service. Memorials may be given to the St. John Lutheran Church or the High Plains Humane Society and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
