Introducing Eleanor Jones, your BANK VI Hero of the Week!
Eleanor was nominated for the help she has given to the Salina community with various concerts to raise money for worthwhile causes. She lends a help hand wherever it is needed.
Every Saturday afternoon Eleanor sings at various nursing homes in Salina, Glasco and Beloit areas with a group known as “The Sunshine Singers.”, She will also sing by herself to bring a little cheer to the home residents. Eleanor says she began singing when she was six years old after hearing her dad sing. Eleanor fell to her knees and asked God to give her a voice like her father. Her favorite gospel songs to sing are “In His Time” and “I Can’t See Why Everybody Won’t Serve the Lord”.
Eleanor will help anyone who needs help. She will sit with people through a medical procedure for a family member, so they don’t need to sit alone. Eleanor says when one of her sons was just a few weeks old, he had to have surgery and she had stayed at the hospital by herself for several days while he recovered. An elderly lady introduced herself to Eleanor and said “you don’t know me, but I know your daddy and I have made arrangements to watch your baby while you get some sleep.” Eleanor says she slept for 18 straight hours. She told the Lord that she would always be there for people whether they know me or not. I’ll sit with them, pray with them – whatever they need.
Eleanor worked as a domestic engineer for over 20-years and now is a foster grandparent volunteering though the Saline County Commission on Aging and also helps brings smiles to schoolchildren by volunteering for USD 305 at Grace E Stewart Elementary, where she is known as “Miss Eleanor” or “Grandma Eleanor”.
Eleanor moved to Salina from Danville, Virginia in 1967 and will celebrate a 53rd wedding anniversary with her husband, Therman, in December.
