Recognitions/Presentations
KASB Boardsmanship
Certificates were presented on behalf of the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) who participated in KASB (Kansas Association of School Boards) academy training last year. Those receiving certificates were: William Hall, superintendent, received an Honor Roll Level I certificate; Johnna Vosseller, board president, received an Honor Roll Level I certificate; and Ann Zimmerman, board member, received an Honor Roll Level I certificate.

You Make A Difference
The You Make A Difference Award is presented to staff members whose exemplary actions support students, colleagues and the mission of Salina Public Schools. Recipients of these awards receive a lapel pin and a handwritten note personally delivered by a board of education member.

Tammy Gibson
Meadowlark Elementary Paraeducator
Greeting each student by name and welcoming them with high-fives, Tammy Gibson makes sure Meadowlark students feel welcome at school. She holds students she works with to high standards while providing encouragement. Her patience and kindness toward students makes a difference every day. Thank you Tammy!

Carie VanDeCreek
South High School Special Education Teacher
A parent brought Carie’s exemplary support and compassion to the attention of Principal Stevens. During the family’s personal hardships, Carie was a critical source of normalcy for the student. The parent shared, “There are no words to express how reassuring it was to know that our student was being loved and cared for during this difficult time.” Thank you Carie!

Heather Jamison
CKCIE Psychometrician
Heather consistently provides high quality support for school psychologists working with many schools. She approaches challenging tasks without hesitation, facilitating evaluations and social skills training with much care and compassion. Thank you Heather for making a difference!

Approve HVAC Repair with Building Controls and Services
The board of education approved the operations department the authority to issue an open purchase order to Building Controls and Services in the amount of $80,000 to be used to debit the ongoing FY17 charges for the company’s service of the HVAC.

Out-of-State Field Trip
The board of education approved the South High Robotics out-of-state trip to Fort Smith, AR on December 2-3, 2016.

The board of education appointed Johnna Vosseller, board president, and Nedra Elbl, board vice president, to the board team for negotiations with NEA-Salina. Members include executive director of human resources, executive director of business, and general counsel.

The board of education appointed Ann Zimmerman and Brett Cooper, board members, to the board team for the meet and confer process with representatives of the classified staff. Members include executive director of human resources, executive director of business, and manager of human resources.

Restructuring of Pay for Certified Substitutes
Nancy Kiltz, executive director of human resources, Steve Dorzweiler, manager of human resources, and Shane Hall, coordinator of human resources, presented the recommended changes for certified substitutes.

Course Proposals
Linn Exline, executive director of school improvement, presented summaries for twelve courses to be added to the high school enrollment books.

Mary Anne Trickle, board member, attended the ribbon cutting at Heusner Elementary along with other board members, and the Smoky Hill Education Service Center Executive Cabinet meeting.

Superintendent’s Report
Mr. William Hall, superintendent of schools, acknowledged the valuable contributions of school volunteers and reported that Spotlight letters were sent to sewing volunteers Andra Hancock, Terry Brightbill, Linda McClaskey, Fran Swisher and Connie Ward. Mr. Hall attended the Heusner Elementary Ribbon Cutting and announced that the next is scheduled at Opportunity Now on December 14 at 12:00 p.m. Mr. Hall thanked Mr. Nicholas Owen, speech/theatre teacher at Central High School, for promoting Central High School as host to the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions on May 11-13, 2018. Hosting this event is quite an honor and will benefit the city of Salina as it will bring in 150-175 schools from across the country with 650-800 students participating. Mr. Hall distributed a copy of the new publication, Pylon, produced by the Central High School journalism class and complimented their work on the project.
