A brief pursuit around 2a.m. Thursday morning after reaching speeds over 70 mph ends when the SUV becomes disabled after hitting curbs and running over a school crossing sign.

Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said an officer tried to stop the 2001 Ford Escape going north on 7th with no lights on.

The vehicle went east on Ash, north of Santa Fe, east on Elm, before the SUV hit a curb at Ohio and Riverside drove through a grassy area and striking the school crossing sign. When a tire on the vehicle went flat, the driver 28-year-old Rodney Ponton and an unknown passenger got out and ran. Ponton was quickly taken into custody,

Ponton was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of DUI, reckless driving, and flee and elude.

Sweeney said it’s possible the passenger if they are identified and located could face charges.
