Louie B. Frazier, 83, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 11:58 p.m., Monday, November 21st, peacefully, at Cedars House 807.
For 64 years, Louie was the devoted husband, friend and bridge partner of the girl he met in high school, Patricia Kingsbury. He also was proud of his three children, four grandchildren, and two year old great-granddaughter.
Louie was a long-time McPherson businessman. He and his family moved to McPherson in 1959, when he was transferred to McPherson to manage the Safeway grocery store on East Kansas Avenue (a building now occupied by McPherson City Hall). Before retirement, he and Pat owned and managed Frazier Interiors and the Bed Room on Main Street. Prior to that, he was employed by Kit Manufacturing Inc, the mobile home plant formerly located in Northeast McPherson. He started as purchasing agent at Kit, and was promoted to positions of increasing responsibility until he was named Vice President of Kit’s national mobile home division, responsible for plants in California, Texas, Oregon, Idaho, and Kansas.
Louie was born in Chapman, Kansas, on February 24, 1933 to Joseph and Opal (Sherraden) Frazier. His grandfather built one of Kansas’s first concrete grain elevators in the 1920’s the Frazier Elevator, which is still standing in downtown Chapman.
Louie attended Chapman grade school, and graduated in 1951 from Dickinson County High School in Chapman. He then attended Kansas State University in Manhattan. While in high school, he met Patricia Lynn Kingsbury, whom he married on September 24, 1952 in Elmo, Kansas, near the farm where Pat was raised. The young couple established their first home in Carlton, and later lived in Hope, Arkansas City, Emporia, and Anthony, before settling in McPherson 56 years ago.
Louie taught his children to fish and enjoy the outdoors from an early age. He also enjoyed hunting, buying and refinishing antiques, and horse racing. When grandchildren came along, he was particularly devoted to spending time with them, and two years ago he welcomed his first great-grandchild into the family. He and Pat were intrepid travelers—they crossed the continental U.S. many times visiting relatives, National Parks, or attending trade shows, and travelled to both Mexico and England to visit family (and attended horse races in both countries). Closer to home, he and Pat played bridge for two generations in a number of bridge-and-dinner clubs. Although for much of his professional life he worked in an office, he never shied away from physical work, such as cutting and splitting firewood, moving furniture and hauling carpet for his furniture store, and helping his father-in-law with wheat harvest.
He was a member of the McPherson Chamber of Commerce, Elk’s Lodge # 502, the McPherson Jaycee’s, McPherson Country Club, and several trade associations in the mobile home and furniture business. Late in life he converted to Catholicism, and along with Pat was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in McPherson and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Along with Pat he participated in church—related volunteer work, which was an important part of his post-retirement life.
Louie is survived by his wife, Pat Frazier, of McPherson; his children, Greg Frazier of Washington, D.C., Steve Frazier and his wife Elizabeth Leech of Mercer Island, Washington, and Marcia Boos-Frazier of Wichita, Kansas; his four grandchildren, Jonathan Frazier of Somerville, Mass, Rosalie Frazier, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dustin Frazier of Wichita, Kansas, and Ceceilia Frazier of Washington D.C.; his great-granddaughter, Bradleigh Frazier of Wichita, Kansas; other relatives and a host of friends.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Opal Frazier, his siblings, Tom Frazier, Bill Sherraden, Carolyn Moser, Roberta Christenson, and Betty Brooks.
Visitation and Rosary will be held on Friday, November 25, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary at 8:15 p.m. all at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 26th, 2016 with Fr. Hien Nguyen officiating.
The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or the Kingsbury Foundation, and they can be sent in care of the Glidden – Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.
