Deputies and Officers in chase with stolen pickup early Wednesday morning

policechaseThe Saline County Sheriffs Office and Salina Police Department were involved in a chase with the driver of a stolen pickup early Wednesday morning.

Saline County Undersheriff Roger Soldan said a deputy saw a 1999 black Toyota Tacoma reported stolen about 12:30a.m. in the 600 block of E. Pacific, and when trying to stop the pickup the driver took off at a high rate of speed east of Pacific, then south on Ohio with speeds reaching 70-95mph. The deputy called off the chase on S. 4th.

Police Captain Mike Sweeney said A short time later a police officer spotted the pickup going west on Iron and began pursuit on several residential streets and the pickup went through a yard in the 100 block of Wisconsin, and the pursuit ended at the intersection of Stack and Missouri after the vehicle suffered mechanical problems. The driver 25-year-old Jose I. Perez was taken into custody without incident.

The pickup owned by Alfonso Bretado-Limon had been stolen between Monday night and Tuesday night in the 200 block of S. 11th. The keys had been left in the vehicle.

Perez is also alleged to have been involved in a gas skip at the Casey’s, 2404 S. 9th, about 10:30 Tuesday night.

Requested charges against Perez include Felony Fleeing and Eluding, theft of fuel, vehicle theft, and several traffic violations. He will also face a charge of possession of meth after a small amount of methamphetamine was found in a backpack that belonged to him.
