Mill Valley beats Goddard 35-34 in OT for Kansas 5A title

mill-valleyPITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) — Mill Valley took advantage of a missed extra point by Goddard in overtime, scoring a touchdown and converting its own point-after for a 35-34 victory Saturday in the Kansas 5A state championship.

Brody Flaming threw for 200 yards and five touchdowns, including a 10-yard pass to Evan Rice in overtime, as the Jaguars (9-4) capped a remarkable turnaround following four losses early in the season.

Goddard (11-2) forced overtime when Blake Young scored from 1 yard out with 4:10 left in regulation, then converted a 2-point conversion to knot the game at 28-all.

The Lions got the ball first in overtime and Blake Sullivan hit Jordan Cooke for a touchdown, but the missed extra point proved to be costly.

Kody Gonzalez had 188 yards and two touchdowns rushing for Goddard, which lost to Pittsburg in its only other title appearance. Sullivan added 150 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
