blo61205Carl “Bo” Blocker Sr., age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday December 5th, 2016 at Salina Regional Hospital. He was born March 12, 1940, in Fort Coffee, OK to Brosco and Mamie Elizabeth Blocker. Carl Blocker was a self-made entrepreneur whos constructional engineering projects can be remembered around the greater parts of Salina.

He is survived by his companion of 45 years Karen Briscoe; children, Wayne Blocker-Massey, Val Blocker- Massey, Carl Blocker Jr, Kharis Blocker-Smith (Oscar Smith), and Broderick Blocker (Dominique Blocker); siblings Bessie Johnson of Tacoma, Wash., Alice Faye Blaine of Spiro, Vallene Parker of Forth Smith, and Teresa Holloway of Fountain, Colorado, Dale Blocker of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Sametra Albert, Jason Revels (Shounta Revels), Tiffani McEachin (Nathaniel McEachin), Tyre Granberry, Dewan Blocker, Deedra Blocker, and Simeon Massey.

Carl blocker was a loving father, amazing grandfather, compassionate foster parent, and a well respected man by all. With his open heart and unfiltered words of truth and wisdom he would help one realize their truth and potential within. He raised men of valor and women of grace.

He enjoyed fishing, a cold beer on a hot day, working with his hands, and taking what he called a ‘siesta’ (nap!), but most of all he loved to provide for his family.

Our Pops, Popso Gramps, buddy, and Daddy will be greatly missed and our admiration and love for him will live within in us all forever.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Ryan Mortuary with Rev. Allen Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Mildred R. Chancy, 97, Delphos, died Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society – Minneapolis. Mildred was born May 5, 1919 near Glasco to Will and Lula (Key) Crum.

Mildred was raised with her siblings on the farm where they kept busy doing daily chores. She attended Fairview and Prairie Point schools. On September 21, 1938 she and Clifford Chancy were united in marriage. To this union two boys were born, Terry and Gary. Mildred enjoyed quilting, gardening, and baking, but her greatest joy was her family.

She was a member of the Delphos United Methodist Church and the Friendly Neighbor Club.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clifford on September 28, 2008; granddaughter Jennifer Chancy; grandson Jason Lhotka; brothers Orval, Lowell, Virgil, and Bill Crum; and sister Madeline Warner.

Survivors include her sons Terry and wife Jan and Gary and wife Mari; sister-in-law Lucy Chancy; four grandchildren Elena Lhotka, Ruben Chancy and wife Stephanie, Vanessa Carter and husband Joe, and Chris Chancy and wife Domi; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Society – Minneapolis.

vet_ffffffClaborn “Clay” A. Fischer, 78, of Salina, KS, formerly of Ellsworth, KS and Beatrice, NE, passed away, Monday, December 5, 2016. He was born September 3, 1938 in Holdenville, Oklahoma, to Otis and Laura (Claborn) Fischer.

Clay graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1956. He was the Plant Manager of Builder’s Choice Concrete in Salina and employed for many years at Beatrice Concrete prior to relocating to Salina, Clay served in the Army National Guard and was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his sons, Dan and wife Lauren of Santa Ana, CA., and Mike and wife Sherri of Longmont, CO.; daughter in law, Pam Fischer, of Cortland, NE.; grandchildren, Tiffany and husband Shane Fort, Jacey Fischer, Grace Fischer, Cole Fischer and Rylie Fischer; great-grandchildren, Natalie Parde and Deacon Fort.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Jeff Fischer, and granddaughter, Emily Fischer.

bre61204Patrick H. Breen, 76, Salina, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 4, 2016.

Born and raised in Burlington, Iowa he moved his young family to Salina in1965. Pat was a successful insurance salesman and an avid golfer who also enjoyed hunting, storytelling, his pets and the Kansas Jayhawks. Pat proudly served his country in the Iowa National Guard from 1960-1965.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margaret (Ross) Breen.

Pat is survived by two sons, Kevin (Lori) Breen of Los Gatos, CA, Kirk (Karen) Breen of Assaria, KS; three daughters, Shawn (David) Halpain of Salina, Heather of Austin, TX, Sheila (Andrew) Kenny of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his former wife, Linda Breen; and his sister Rosemary Haight of Burlington, Iowa.

mei61127Mary Ann (née Hanlin) Meister, 86, of Salina, Kansas, passed away at her home on Sunday, November 27, 2016. She received the Anointing of the Sick and last rites from The Holy Mother Church.

She was born to Lawrence W. and Ann Louise (née Steward) Hanlin on December 15, 1929, in Dallas, Texas. Mary Ann graduated from Clayton High School, Clayton, Missouri, in 1947. She attended Monticello College in Godfrey, Illinois and Miss Hickey Business School, St. Louis, Missouri.

She met and married John Joseph Meister, August 9, 1952, in St. Louis. To this union, three daughters were born: Barbara Ann Meister, of the home; Linda Sue (Dave) Lilly and Mary Katherine (Joe) Kuhn, all of Salina. She was a homemaker until her beloved Jack passed away in 1969. She then made a career in retail sales and had exceptional customer service skills and was known for her friendly greetings. Her favorite job was at the Disney Store in St Louis. She held a number of positions in Salina, including Vernon’s, Carol’s Hallmark, Mr. Penguin, SAM’s and Dillons. Her motto was “Sell, Sell, Sell!!”

Mary Ann was a loving and devoted mother to her daughters and little, white Schnauzer, Jack.

In addition to her daughters and their husbands, Mary Ann is survived by her brothers Robert (Carol), North Bend, Oregon and James (Jayne) Hanlin, St. Louis; a brother-in-law, Richard C Meister of Illinois; her grandchildren, Derek (Holly)and Jared (Veronica) Lilly, Kelsey (Burl) Ward, Max, Jack and Corbin Kuhn; eleven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband Jack and twin brother, Billie Dan, preceded her in death.

Because of her love of animals, Mary Ann’s family requests memorials be made in her name to The Salina Animal Shelter, 329 N 2nd Street, Salina, Kansas 67401. Her family requests no flowers.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016, 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina. Inurnment will take place in St. Louis, Missouri

1755_bookmarion_2016-12-08Rev. Marion L. Book, 99, passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2016 in Abilene. He was born September 12, 1917 in Thomas Oklahoma the son of Isaiah E and Hattie E. (Haldeman) Book. Growing up in the area, Marion attended local schools and graduated from Jabbok High School in Thomas. On July 25, 1939, he married Eunice A. Zook. The early years of their married life was spent in California returning to Abilene in 1944 where they farmed north of Abilene. In 1956, following a call to the ministry, they moved to Morrison, Illinois where Marion served a Brethren In Christ Church. In 1979 they returned to Abilene where he became the superintendent of Brown’s Home until retiring in 1986. He was preceded in death by: wife, Eunice; grandson, Kevin Book and two brothers, Paul and Alvin Book. Marion was a member of the Brethren In Christ Church.
He leaves behind: three daughters, Mary Ellen (Stan) Spealman of Indianola, Mississppi; Elaine (Gene) Wilkens of Firestone, Colorado and Annette (Tom)Butkus of Overland Park; son, Roy Lee (Kathleen) Book of Morrison, Illinois; two sisters, Esther Ulrey of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and Ruth Haskell of Raymondville, Texas; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, December 12th at the Brethren In Christ Church with Pastor Dale Engle officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1:30 – 2:30 PM Sunday, December 11th at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials in his name to the Brethren In Christ Church or Missions. 4034127_wlppTheresa Mary (Hamel) (Deaver) Schwab was born on August 3, 1934 in Zurich, KS to Francis and Yvette (Favreau) Hamel. She attended school at St. Ann Grade School in Clyde, then graduated from Clyde High School. Theresa worked at Plaza Theater, Seldens’ Grocery Store and Lynch Variety Store, while in high school. She also worked as a cook for Clifton School District for many years and janitor before retiring. After retirement, she worked at Clifton Nursing Home, Senior Citizen Center, cleaned for St. Marys Church and helped those in need.

She married Leo Francis Deaver July 3, 1951, to which they had nine children; son Leon Deaver and wife Loleta of Concordia, KS; Roxanne Feuerbacher of Hiawatha KS; daughter Brenda and husband Gary Chaput of Leavenworth, KS; daughter Christine and husband Loren Charbonneau of Conroe, TX; Michelle and husband Rex Cowell of Manhattan, KS; daughter Carla and husband Rick Moore of Clyde, KS; daughter Francine and husband Curtis Ernst of Mankato, KS; son Daniel Deaver and wife Judy of Clifton KS; daughter Sharon and fiancé Lance Smith of Hays, KS.

Leo Deaver passed away on September 29, 1973. On June 6 1977, Theresa married Daryl Lee Schwab; to which they had one child, Yvette. Yvette and husband Victor Urbaniak reside in Williston, ND.  Theresa has 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, 16 step-greatgrandchildren. She has two stepchildren: Carol Thomas of Katy TX; Beverly Schwab of Gafford, TX. Daryl also preceded her in death. Additional survivors include brother John Hamel, Concordia, KS; sister Rita Salmon, Anadarko, OK; sister, Mary Ann Morris, AL; sister, Pauline and husband Francis Ouellette, San Jose, CA and sister, Kathleen and husband Dennis Ouellette, Clay Center, KS.

Theresa was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Alter Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ernest Hamel and stepson, Dean Schwab.

vet_ffffffJohn T. Ringle, 68, passed away December 8, 2016. He was born April 2, 1948, in Salina, KS, to Jack and Ruth (Olson) Ringle. He married Michelle (Nice) in Holyrood on August 14, 1998.

John worked at the Holyrood Co-op for 13 years and was a truck driver for several different companies. He was a member of the Holyrood American Legion and served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

John is survived by his wife, Michelle Ringle of Holyrood; son, John T. Ringle, Jr. of Holyrood; step-son, Alex Gonzalez (Elizabeth) of Ellinwood; step-son, Aaron Gonzalez (Sarah) of Great Bend; and granddaughters, Alexandria and Quinn Gonzalez. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters.

thumbnailLucy Cyrilla (Grady) Bolt-Gilliland passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016 at Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 99. She was born on September 17, 1917 in Plainville to the late John and Lucy (Weber) Grady. Having lost her 3 sisters and brother to the flu in 1919, she grew up an only child on the farm in Rooks County. When she started school, her father built a small house in Plainville so she and her mother could live in town during the week, returning to the farm on weekends. After graduating high school she attended Marymount College in Salina, Kansas for one year.

Lucy was united in marriage to Omar Bolt on June 9, 1945. He brought two sons to the family, Bob and Don. Omar passed away in November 1971. In September 1974 she was married to Harold “Ike” Gilliland. He brought three children to the family, Ron, Barry, and Carolyn. Ike passed away in October 1976. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart Guild, Daughters of Isabella, Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary, Priscilla Art Club, and Alpha Gamma ESA.

As a young girl, Lucy learned to play violin and piano. By the age of ten she was playing the pipe organ in church. She also played for Glee Club and the orchestra in high school. At the age of 12 her mother passed away, leaving her to work and take care of herself and her father.
She worked at the dime store, the telephone office, Plainville State Bank, and the CO-OP. In later years she enjoyed traveling and felt blessed to have seen so many places, many of them with Ike, which included Nassau, Canary Islands, Germany, Austria, Amsterdam, Switzerland, Portugal, Africa, Canada, and many states including Alaska and Hawaii.

Lucy is survived by her step-son Barry Gilliland and wife Donna of Plainville; step-daughter Carolyn Metcalf and husband Don of Plainville; daughter-in-law Mary Lou Gilliland of Plainville; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Lucy Grady; husbands Omar Bolt and Ike Gilliland; step-sons Bob Bolt, Don Bolt, and Ron Gilliland; three sisters and one brother.

The writer Paul reminds us, “These three remain: faith, hope, and love.” Lucy was a woman of strong faith, eternal hope, and abiding love. Her own life was a testimony that indeed, “The greatest of these is love.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home with Rosary at 3:00 pm; and from 6:00-8:00 pm at the church with Vigil at 7:00 pm.

Cheryl J. “CJ” Nickel, 55, of Lindsborg died Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Salina Regional Health Center. Cheryl was born April 10, 1961 in Newton, KS. She is the daughter of Charles “Fuzz” and Mildred (Murray) Marston.

She is survived by her mother Mildred (Murray) Marston, of Lindsborg; two daughters: Calli and Cristin Nickel, both of Lindsborg; three brothers: Craig Martson of Lindsborg, Murray (Mary) Marston of Ellsworth, KS, and Galen Marston of Lindsborg; She also has two grandsons, Seth and Carson Nickel, both of Lindsborg.

She is preceded in death by her father, Charles Marston, and half-brother, Chuck Marston.

Cremation has been chosen and there will not be visitation. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 9, at 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lindsborg, with Pastor Patrick Broz officiating.

Terry Wayne Peterson, 64, of Assaria passed away Monday, December 5, 2016 at Salina Regional Health Center.

Terry was born February 5, 1952 in Salina to the late Harold and Dorothy (Walsh) Peterson.

Terry was a graduate of Southeast of Saline High School. On July 3, 1970 he married Janice Peterson at the Assaria Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife Janice, of the home; sons, Brian (Joy) Peterson, of Salina, KS, Scott (Christianna) Peterson, of Assaria, and Kevin (Danielle) Peterson, of Assaria; aunt, Dorothy Johnson, of Salina; brothers, Randy (Linda) Peterson, of Caney, KS, Rick (Janet) Peterson, of College Station, TX; sister, Cindy (Dan) Clark, of Kechi, KS; as well as 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vistiation will be from 5pm to 7pm, Thursday, December 8 at Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 9 at Assaria Lutheran Church, with pastor Laura Smith, officiating. Interment will follow at the Assaria Lutheran Cemetery.

Anneva R. Anderson, 82, Oregon, WI, died Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Sienna Meadows Memory Care in Oregon after a long illness. She was formerly a long-term resident of Mentor, KS.

Mrs. Anderson was born on February 2, 1934, in Topeka, KS to Francis L. and Ruth A. (Farquer) Johanson. She married Arvid E. Anderson, Jr. on August 2, 1953 in Topeka, KS. A loving and devoted wife and mother, she was a homemaker for many years. After her husband died in 1982, she worked as a bookkeeper and office manager at Western Star AG Resources until her retirement in 2004.

As a youth, she committed herself to Christ and was baptized. She lived out her faith in service to others all through her life. Mrs. Anderson was an active member of the Mentor United Methodist church for many years.

Survivors include her children, Steven E. (Vicki), Wichita, KS; Stanley D. (Janette), Kingsville, TX; Karen D., Fresno, CA; Kent D. (Brenda), Oregon, WI; and Lori E., Madison, WI, as well as eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December, 10, 2016 at the Mentor United Methodist Church, Joe Anderson officiating. A lunch will be served afterwards. Visitation will be before the service, starting at 10 a.m.

Douglas Henry Langhofer, 47, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, December 06, 2016, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. 

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, December 12, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.  Visitation will be from Noon to 8 P.M. on Sunday, Decmeber 11, 2016, at the mortuary, with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday evening.  The family is requesting that donations be given to the Langhofer Girls Education Fund and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
