Superintendent’s Excellence Awards
Certificates were presented to students who participated at the state level in fall activities:

Cross Country/Salina High School Central: Tyler Olmsted finished 79th at state, Kyler Caspers finished 83rd at state, Kadyn Cobb placed 14th at state and was a state medalist, Zoie Counts placed 31st at state, Phoebe Helton placed 62nd at state, Tabetha Deines placed 89th at state, Andrea Hays placed 99th at state, Angelica Lance placed 100th at state and Madison Pham also placed. Brad Dix is the team’s coach.

Cross Country/Salina High School South: Daycee DeWindt placed 25th at state, Macy Linenberger placed 46th at state, Michaela Kaiser placed 76th at state, Brooke Renshaw placed 80th at state, Emily Allen placed 93rd at state, Jissel Campa placed 95th at state, Haylee LeFort placed 96th at state, Josh Reed placed 3rd at state, Keetan Munsell placed 20th at state, Conner Munsell placed 80th at state, Cameron Scott placed 85th at state, Ajay Dandu placed 92nd at state, Ivan Pike placed 97th at state and Logan Fricks placed 101st at state. Travis Peterson is the team’s coach.

Girls Tennis/Salina High School South: The South Lady Cougar Tennis Team had 6 state qualifiers this season. The team finished 7th overall in team standings at the state tournament. Cameron Munk had a season record of 27-11, Jessica Smith had a season record of 26-12, Quinn Munk had a season record of 24-13, Jessica Coleman had a season record of 22-15, Sydney McAdoo finished 10th in state singles and had a season record of 26-13 and Tesa Wilcox finished 12th in state singles and had a season record of 25-16. Ryan Stuart is the team’s coach.

Girls Tennis/Salina High School Central: The Central Lady Mustang Tennis Team had 4 state qualifiers this season. The team finished as AVCTL League Runner-up, 5A Regional Runner-up and placed 4th overall in the state championships. Brittany Blackim finished 5th in league singles, 3rd at regionals and 7th at state, Karley Benson finished 6th in league singles, 5th at regionals and was a state qualifier, Emma Norris and Maddie Stack finished 3rd in league doubles, 2nd at regionals and 7th at state. Mike Goll is the team’s coach.

Golf/Salina High School South: The South High Girls golf team had 1 state qualifier this season. Analisa Bridge finished 11th at state. Trey Crow is the team’s coach.

Golf/Salina High School Central: The Central High Girls golf team placed 10th as a team at state. Team members are Ellie Cobb, Bailee Steinle, Elena Ewing, Tisha Jayne, Sara Mermis and MacKenzie Wilcox. Steve Ewing is the team’s coach.

Fort Hays State Math Relays/Salina High School South: The South High math team finished 6th overall. Team members include Peyton Froome, David Ollenberger, Allison Hull, Trey Turner, Isaac Mitchell, Connor Talbott, Gage Burch Leidig, Taylor Davison, Luke Streit, Seth Thompson, Dylan Losch, Tyler Ross, Mason Streit, Brendan Larson, Dylan Kruep, Allen Heberly-Morabito and Mason Frost. Candace Mahoney and Jason Hooper are the team’s sponsors.

Fort Hays State Math Relays/Salina High School Central: The Central High math team finished 2nd overall. Team members include Abbi Schroeder, Umar Sandhu, Hannah Janzen, De’Riece Burse, Garrett Newton, Annie Hays, Chloe Guillot, Payden Cox, Phoebe Helton, Callahan Figgs, Riley Counts, Gage Burmaster, Caleb Kline, Houston Griffitts and Kadyn Cobb. Deanna Cullins is the team’s sponsor.

The board of education approved the Lakewood Middle Jazz Band trip to Norfolk, NE on March 26-27, 2017.

Construction Bid
The board of education approved the bid of Cheney Construction, Inc. in the amount of $227,690 for the renovation and addition to Salina Adult Education Center.

Course Proposals
The board of education approved the twelve courses as presented at the November 8, 2016 meeting.

Restructuring of Pay
The board of education approved the restructuring of pay for certified substitutes.

2017 Legislative Platform
The board of education approved the 2017 Legislative Platform.

Patron Insight Survey Results
Ken DeSieghardt, CEO Patron Insight, gave the results of a Salina community opinion survey that was conducted during the fall of 2016 to learn feedback about the district’s services, communication and more.

Capital Improvement Plan
The board of education was presented with the preliminary capital improvement, equipment and vehicle replacement lists for first reading and review. This will be brought back to the January 10, 2017 meeting for approval.

Busing Agreement
Mr. William Hall, superintendent of schools, presented the busing agreement with Twin Valley School District to renew the agreement for another five years to run through 2021. This will be brought back to the January 10, 2017 meeting for approval.

School Board Committee Reports
Ramona Newsom, board member, attended a Parks & Recreation Advisory Board meeting.
Nedra Elbl, vice president, attended the Kansas Association of School Boards convention along with other board members.
Ann Zimmerman, board member, attended the Head Start Policy Council meeting.
Mary Anne Trickle, board member, attended the Smoky Hill Education Service Center Executive Cabinet meeting.

Superintendent’s Report
Mr. William Hall, superintendent of schools, reported that he met with legislators and other superintendents at a lunch meeting. He shared that he also met with Representative Johnson about KPERS. Mr. Hall reported that he attended the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) event held at Great Plains Manufacturing. Mr. Hall attended the Diploma Completion Program graduation and reported that a total of 75 individuals have graduated from that program. He congratulated Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE) Executive Director Mike Lowers for receiving the Presence Learning Award of Excellence for the use of online speech services.
