A child may receive a blank doll upon arrival to the Emergency Room at Memorial Hospital. The doll is for the child to keep and may help comfort them. Parents can help their child color a face on the doll so it looks like him or her. The child can draw an expression on the face that reflects how he or she feels and draw the injury or pain they feel. When the medical staff examines the child, they may use the doll to discuss the injury or illness and use it to demonstrate any medical procedures the child may need, so the child will understand what may happen next.
The K-Kids club of Abilene provides Kiwanis dolls as a service to the community. If you would like to learn more about this project or about Kiwanis, contact Jo Schwartz at 785-479-6880.
