You’re invited to take a trip down the rabbit hole and join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, for a spot of tea or a glass of wine in celebrating 50 Years in Wonderland. BBBS has been serving the Saline Country children for 50 years. The August 23rd celebration, from 6-8 p.m. at Rolling Hills Museum, will be a quirky Wonderland celebration filled with confections, charm, and chatter!
“Fifty years in Wonderland is our way of saying thank you to the community, businesses, volunteers, and supporters that have helped us to serve local children for the past 50 years,” said Hayley Morrical, CEO.
“This year we are very excited to kick off the next 50 years by announcing a new program coming September, as well as honoring Roger Morrison, Big of the Year. Roger never gives up on being a positive influence in the life of his Little Brother. He is always one step ahead, planning the next move to make in order to help his Little meet his goals.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters was formed by New York City Clerk, Ernest Coulter, in 1904 after seeing more boys come through the courtroom. He recognized that caring adults could help many of these children stay out of trouble. This began “Big Brothers.” Catholic Big Sisters then began after the Ladies of Charity group befriended many young girls who had come through the court’s circuits. In 1977, these groups merged to form Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
Meanwhile, in 1968, what is now Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina was formed. Since BBBS of Salina’s beginning, thousands of Saline County children have been matched. BBBS of Salina has operated under the belief that in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life, and our job as mentors is to defend their potential.
As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 5 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.
