UPDATED: Blue-green algae danger has prompted closure of Lakewood Park Lake

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has issued a closure of Lakewood Park Lake in Salina because of the blue-green algae danger.

A closure status indicates that conditions are extremely dangerous for humans and pets. Harmful algal toxins and cell counts are at dangerously high levels. Any kind of contact with the water body is prohibited.

Barricades block all access points of the lake. Lakewood Park remains open for all other activities including the walking trails, Frisbee golf and the picnic areas remain open.

While not under an advisory from the KDHE, warning signs remain up at the pond at Jerry Ivey Park for the presence of blue-green algae in the pond.
