A 14-year-old Salina girl was taken to Salina Regional Health Center Monday afternoon after she was hit by a car in south Salina.
Salina Police Sergeant Brent Rupert said Tuesday morning that Chance Atkins, 17, of Salina, was eastbound on Magnolia when the 1996 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am he was driving struck the girl who was attempting to cross Magnolia in an unmarked crosswalk at the Magnolia-Edwards intersection. Rupert said that cars in the eastbound driving lane had stopped to let the girl cross, but that when traffic began to back up, Atkins switched to the passing lane and did not see the girl in the intersection.
Emergency responders were called to the scene at 2:48 p.m. Monday.
The girl was transported to Salina Regional Health Center in serious condition, Rupert said. He added that as of Tuesday morning, he had heard that the girl was going to be released and that she suffered some bumps, bruises, and road rash.
