Viola E. Young, age 90, of Manhattan, KS, formerly of South Beloit, IL, died Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Center in Manhattan, KS.
She was born on July 28, 1928, in Sterling, Illinois, the daughter of Percy V. and Mary (Fickle) Green. She attended schools in the area, joined the Salvation Army, and then entered the workforce.
Viola worked for over 30 years as a waitress at the Wagon Wheel Lodge in Rockton, IL. She spoke fondly of her time there and the kindness of “Mr. W” and “Ms. M”. She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge in Rockford, IL. Viola enjoyed spending time with people and loved to make them laugh.
Viola and her second husband, Walter Young, were married for over 25 years until his death in 1985.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Ann, location unknown, son John Beach of Flagler Beach, Florida, son Allen(Darla) Young of New Market, Maryland, son Michael(Carolyn) Young of Manhattan, Kansas ten grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren. She has one surviving sister, Mary Wilkinson, recently of Sterling, IL. Viola was preceded in death by her brother Robert Green and son Clarence Beach.
There will be a memorial gathering at Floral Lawn Cemetery in South Beloit, IL, on Saturday, October 6, 2018.
