Teaching and entertaining will be the mission of Lawrence’s Richard Renner when he visits Salina next week.
The teaching artist is scheduled to be in residence on Thursday and Friday next week in Salina schools, through the Arts Infusion Program of Salina Arts and Humanities.
The residency includes a community performance of his interactive ReCycle Cycle at 6 p.m. October 5 in Campbell Plaza at 126 S. Santa Fe. This performance is free, family friendly, and open to the public in conjunction with First Friday Night Live.
The ReCycle Cycle is created entirely of reclaimed or recycled parts, tasked with educating and entertaining. It is a rolling lesson in the value of the environment and its resources, delivered with fun and function. Participating kids and adults are encouraged to explore a number of on-board ecological activities. The activities are interspersed with juggling, balancing and stunts using recovered trash while discussing recycling, led by Renner as the Goofball Garbage Man.
In addition, Renner will bring the ReCycle Show to local schools. These performances, focused on reasons to conserve resources and how our personal choices affect the environment, will lead students through the wonderful world of trash and the environment, with wacky inventions, circus acts, music, and interactive games. Renner’s performances feature curriculum connections in science for all ages.
Visiting from Lawrence, Renner has entertained audiences throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including a long history with the Salina community as a roving and children’s stage performer at the Smoky Hill River Festival. Renner’s science-based arts infusion residency is funded in part by the Greater Salina Community Foundation.
